Drinking in Boston: A Graduate's Literary Tour

beerlearning.jpg Spring has come to Boston and with it, graduation season. And with graduation season come the herds of parents, siblings, and friends who want to take part in the big celebration and to seemingly annoy the hell out of every graduate in the city. We at Bostonist pondered this problem for a while and thought, “What better way to ease the tension than to drink?” We realize that liquor is not the answer to all of life’s problems, but having a place to go to entertain the masses will certainly help solve this problem at least.

We tried to make some sense out of the Boston area’s hundreds of bars by separating them into category according to college major. Some (most) bars have nothing to do with the subject other than the name, but we thought that was close enough. Today we look at the literary bars of Boston.

Beckett’s Pub: Great little place, but we hear the service is terrible: you keep waiting and waiting…

Bukowski Tavern: Alcoholism, womanizing, and genius. Cheers.

Grendel’s Den
: Tip back a stein of mead (or pint of IPA) and buy that knight a drink.

Brendan Behan Pub: A distinguished Irish poet, fiction writer, and playwright, Behan liked to spend his spare time in the IRA.

Great Scott: In this case the name is clearly referring to F. Scott Fitzgerald. Celebrate the man behind The Great Gatsby.

Daisy Buchanan: The woman beyond Gatsby.

Plough and Stars: The location where the locally published and nationally renowned literary journal Ploughshares was founded.

Walrus and the Carpenter: Perfect place to take tourists who 1) listen to the Beatles or 2) know the Tweedledee Tweedledum ditty in Lewis Carroll’s Through the Looking-Glass.

The Liquor Store: Every lonely writer’s favorite place on a Friday night. (Especially the bull riding.)

The Pour House: Where you’ll be if you insist on following that dream to be a writer.
