Sometimes, the best remedy comes unexpectedly. After a crummy road trip, the Sox needed a win badly, and they got one, thanks to Tim Wakefield. In a windswept Fenway (when they said highs of 70s, we thought you meant temperature and not gusts, thanks again, weatherfolks), Wake induced popups and flailing from the East-leading Blue Jays, pacing the Sox to a 2-1 win.
Wakefield went eight innings, allowing only a home run by old friend Kevin Millar to sully his performance. The win ran Wake's lifetime record against Toronto to 16-1, and only about half of that can be attributed to the climate-controlled environment at SkyDome. Last night, we must stress, was NOT climate controlled. The Sox runs came in the second, off the bats of Jeff Bailey (RBI single) and George Kotteras (sac fly). It was all they needed. Papelbon nailed down the save, his 11th in 11 tries. While Millar was in town, he didn't need much coaxing to talk about David Ortiz' struggles. "The important thing is to have fun," was Kevin's unsurprising advice.
The surgery season is beginning for the Celtics and Bruins. Kevin Garnett will get the bone spurs in his knee out next week, and is expected, and hoped, to be ready for training camp. Paul Pierce's ankle, Ray Allen's hamstring, and Kendrick Perkins' shoulder are also going to be examined. David Krejci (hip), Phil Kessel (torn rotator cuff) and Andrew Ference (groin) are among the first wave of Bruins ready to go under the knife. And you complain about going to work in the morning.
