Hooray For Earth

Holy Fuck at Middle East
with Crocodiles, Hooray For Earth

With their self-titled debut, the members of Hooray For Earth sought a middle ground between Nine Inch Nail’s industrial thrash and the grunge force of Nirvana. The guitars dropped low, the sythns soared high, and singer Noel Heroux’s voice claimed the milieu. All was double-tracked for that Elliott Smith sheen. The band's follow-up Cellphone EP captured the sounds of an exploding star with more focus on swirling, subterranean guitar textures and decidedly celestial synth tones. Just check the ending of Videostore: as the song nears its closure, it is stripped to a basic rhythm before the hiss of a sealed vacuum precedes a triumph of synth and guitar. Perfect.

Hooray For Earth performs tonight at the Middle East. We witnessed the band's guitar-rock victory for the first time a year ago, when then-drummer Seth Kasper tore off stage trailing a mess of cables and wires. Last month at Harper’s Ferry, we saw Heroux channel Cobain in both appearance and tone. Tonight, we’re not sure what to expect. But it’s guaranteed to be epic.
