Parades

Memorial Day isn't just for not going to work. It's also an opportunity to honor this nation's dead by watching Shriners drive their fuel-efficient vehicles down Highland Ave. Somerville's Memorial Day parade begins at City Hall at 1 p.m., but you can catch some Shriner action throughout the city beginning at 8 a.m.

Movies

The HFA continues its Dardennes brothers retrospective with La promesse (1997), a social drama shot like a documentary that presages their future work. Screening with Lessons from a University on the Fly (1982), a series of documentary sketches of Polish immigrants living in Belgium. Harvard Film Archive, Carpenter Center, 24 Quincy St., Cambridge, 7 p.m. $8/$6.

Thrash

Testament was one of the earliest acts to adopt the American heavy metal idiom thrash, and its 1987 effort The Legacy remains part of the genre's bedrock. 22 years after the fact, can its members still shred? Take a trip to Worcester to find out. Performing with Unearth and Lazarus A.D. The Palladium, 261 Main St., Worcester, 6:30 p.m. $25.
