Monday's the magic day: the Boston Newspaper Guild will vote on a deal calling for 10% wage cuts and other concessions to bring the budget down according to New York Times demands. Steven Ainsley, the Globe's $2 million publisher, asserted in a recent memo to union members that 23% pay cuts are still on the table for them (even though nonunion managers' cuts are limited to 5%—o-ho!) if the existing agreement is not approved on Monday. Ouch, Steven! Ainsley defends the protection of managers by noting that a lack of bonuses will lower their salaries by about 15%. But why was any manager getting a bonus while running the Globe into the ground over the past few years? Maybe the Globe Q&A for employees has the answer? We doubt it.
