Sports Redux: 7-0

jeterface.jpg Why is Derek Jeter making this face? Is it just because the Yankees have now lost all seven games to the Red Sox this year? Is it because first place in the AL East just changed hands? Or is he just going loco after having to stand in the field for long inning after long inning while his pitching staff lets the Sox run around the bases?

Last night, it was Chien-Ming Wang who got smacked around by the home team. Wang, 0-4 and with the ever-sympathetic NY media trying to cook up an injury for him, didn't even make it out of the third inning before he was chased out by a Mike Lowell home run, a 4-1 Sox lead, and a pitch count heading for the thousands.

Tim Wakefield went to 8-3 on the season; he left with the lead 6-3, watched nervously as Ramon Ramirez surrendered back-to-back HRs by Damon and Teixiera, then watched slightly less nervously as Papelbon walked A-Rod (lustily saluted with a "You did steroids" chant from the Fenway faithful) before incinerating Robinson Cano with a 154-mph fastball and inducing a lazy fly ball from Posada to end the game. And happiness reigned again in our little bandbox.

The Sox will go for eight in a row against NY tonight, with Brad Penny matched up against C.C. Sabathia.

The Patriots are getting ready for the season. Malcontented Vince Wilfork showed up for camp yesterday and says everything is cool: "I felt it was best for me to come out here, and it's best for the organization to know that I am out here." He's hard to miss. The Patriots also have to deal with a little small-dog-style yapping from new Jets head coach Rex Ryan. Ryan says he's not there to "kiss Belichick's rings" (yes, he said "rings") and says he and the Jets aren't intimidated by the fact that the Patriots (if not everyone) is better than them. Belichick refuses to snipe back, because his whole attention is devoted to Buffalo on Opening Day.
