It is always trippy to think about the fact that we are living through history and watching legacies be written before our very eyes. While the 2009 Red Sox and its fans are busy keeping their eyes on the prize and the standings, we are witnessing one of the best bullpens in Red Sox history, seeing what is, on paper, the best pitching rotation in the game and watching future Hall of Famers hone their crafts.
On the other hand, we are watching what was supposed to be a storybook tale of a pitcher from the other side of the world turn into a $103 million nightmare and cautionary tale. Before our eyes, the potential legacy of Daisuke Matsuzaka is taking a turn for the worse. The Japanese phenom was going to make the transition from Japanese baseball to MLB, leaving a trail strewn with baffled batters in his wake.
What has happened instead is that the American baseball team now finds its would-be Japanese star on the DL. Say what you will - and the press is saying it all - part of the problem is that Dice-K was busy being a rockstar pitcher back home when he should have been focusing on gearing up for another season with the team that is paying him $103 million.
The good news, of course, is that if the Red Sox were going to have a multimillion investment go bust, this is the best possible time for it to happen. The Sox have a couple of days until the Dawn of the Smoltz Area, but the team today steps into Nationals Park. That means that Smoltzy debuts during this series. Baseball fans are already swooning with anticipation. All the team has to do is record two wins between now and Thursday - today is begins with Brad Penny on the mound.
In non-Sox news, word is that someone within the Celtics organization offered Rajon Rondo and Ray Allen as part of a quickly-squelched deal that would have brought Richard Hamilton, Tayshaun Price and Rodney Stuckey to Boston. Discuss in the comments.

Danny Ainge needs to be strapped to a table and kept away from his cell phone until at least Friday.
Memo to Bob Ryan: Daisuke has earned his salary, which we can't say for you when you write these dickish columns. It's not Daisuke's fault that MLB has a fucked up signing process for Japanese players. What do Josh Beckett, Johan Santana, Carlos Zambrano, James Shields, Jake Peavy, John Lackey, Tim Wakefield, and A.J. Burnett have in common? Fewer wins than Daisuke in '07 and '08. Only CC, Halladay and Brandon Webb won more. (Assuming I can add.)
Hey Danny: Keep Rondo unless you get an insane offer. As for Ray Allen, how much does he really have left? It's cold but Danny might need to go Belichick with Ray. Prince just might help this roster and a new back-up PG would be good. Pruitt is unknown (at best) and who knows about Marbury.
Amen, MJG. You took the words out of my mouth.
