Sam Yoon Goes All Blogsy

Boston mayoral candidate Sam Yoon has a blog. The first entry in Yoon's "Diary" went up on the lefty Web site Daily Kos yesterday, and it quickly garnered more than 60 comments. Yoon seems to have replied to most of them. The blog illustrates Yoon's talking point that "Boston needs a mayor who not only appreciates the role of technology but also uses it himself."

In the course of the discussion, Yoon name-dropped Tom Vanderbilt's best-seller Traffic (the one about cars, not about drugs), misspelled opponent Kevin McCrea's name, compared Boston's transportation infrastructure to old spaghetti (Because it is dry and brittle? A coded swipe at Italian mayor Tom Menino?), gave his support to Byron Rushing's hate crimes bill, and gave a shout-out to Bostonist's favorite mayor, Mayor Joe.

Daily Kos is a national Web site, and it's another signal that Yoon, whose first round of fundraising happened last September in California, has established his political base in a sphere beyond Boston—which some think is the best way to defeat the entrenched Menino machine.

I saw Yoon out at the St.Pat's day parade. He navigates the drunken masses with grace. I'm not sure about the mass. machine; yet to be seen.

I don't have a problem with any of the candidates, including Menino. He's probably been around too long, and definitely needs a new approach to dealing with the firemen because what's happening isn't working and he needs to fix it even if he's not the cause, but I don't see him as a bad guy. I like Yoon. Young, energetic, new perspective, etc. Love it. Time for Shepard Fairey to not plagiarize a photo of him.

Two points: The spaghetti comment seems intentional to me and not true to his whole approach. He seems to be someone who worries about not offending people. But, it's politics and not a big deal in the grand scheme of things.

The trip to California to raise cash is a fact of life in politics in 2009. And Yoon is up against a machine so he has to do it. But, money is the problem in politics. Too much. I'd prefer a system where a candidate for Mayor in Boston isn't allowed to go to CA on a trip like that. But, the sky is blue in my world.

I've met Sam and I really doubt that spaghetti comment was meant to be a hit on Menino. As far as I've seen he isn't running a negative campaign at all and I don't think he would take a cheap shot like that. But, maybe that's just me.

Besides that, I'm glad Sam's running. It's time for a real mayoral election, not one where there's low voter turnout. This is the first city race I've really found hot and interesting and I'm excited to see where it goes.

Not only is Yoon blogsy, but he is sellin' some snazzy apparel a la Obama. You can get multi-language Yoon shirts and Yoon onesies for doggy and baby. I think he should add: "YOON: I CAN HAZ BLOG."

Yoon is a la Obama. Sam Yoon for Mayor! He'll provide the local change Obama needs so that the new vision for America can be effective.
