Obama Family Coming To The Vineyard

Martha's Vineyard is always a desireable vacation spot for everyone, even Presidents. That's why the news that president Barack Obama and family will be on vacation on the Vineyard during the last week in August was met without much surprise.

The presence of federal agent type people on the island earlier this year made the trip a poorly-kept secret. Agents have been preparing by reserving rooms in Oak Bluffs and Edgartown and vetting possible rental properties in Cow Bay, East Chop, and Edgartown Great Pond. Some Vineyarders expect the Obama's to stay in Oak Bluffs in deference to the town's historical connection to the Underground Railroad.

What will the First Family do on Martha's Vineyard? Aside from beaches, shopping and ice cream? Michelle Obama made a big deal out of her White House garden so maybe she can visit the FARM Institute. Sasha and Malia could get some sailing in at Sail Martha's Vineyard. They're probably too late to properly register which means some special waiver may be required. Not a problem. Certainly, Obama will want to play some hoops. Oak Bluffs may be rushing through a plan to re-pave the town’s basketball courts to accomodate him.

Oh, and, Bostonist isn't afraid to say it: The Boston Globe was correct about the Obamacation back in April. The Globe reported the plans, the White House denied there would be ANY vacation and we mocked them. The two-week visit was trimmed to one week but the rest appears good. Look Globe, don't let it go to your head. We could introduce a clock to the business end of a sledgehammer and that sucker would still be right twice a day.
