Sergeant James Crowley, the Cambridge police officer who arrested Henry Louis Gates Jr., actually appeared on WEEI's Dennis & Callahan show this morning to give his version of the events. Crowley reportedly was asked about president Barack Obama's comments on the arrest of Gates last week, and was given a chance to apologize. He didn't exactly criticize Obama directly. He did say it was "regrettable" that someone would comment on this incident "without knowing the whole story". Crowley appeared to speak in a very calm, rational manner during his call-in appearance. It's his right to choose to explain or not explain himself in any forum he wishes. Given Dennis & Callahan's history, their show might not be the right choice. Look, Ed Harding is an ex-sports reporter, too. But, he is not controversial.

Yeah, defending himself on a show that thinks it's okay to compare black kids to gorillas is not going to help the appearance that Crowley has some race issues.
Say what you will about D & C political rantings, especially Callahan's. But geezus h. christ, can we drop the nonsense about Joe The Gorilla? Does it really need to be brought-up again & again & again? That incident was nothing more than a very poorly timed joke. Nothing more, nothing less. Anybody who watches Seinfeld would understand the leap that John Dennis made on that fateful day to tie-in the Metco kids and Joe the Gorilla. Very poorly timed and regrettable for sure. But racist? I'm not buying it.
Richard Weinblatt, director of the Institute for Public Safety at Central Ohio Technical College, said the police sergeant was responsible for defusing the situation once he realized Gates was the lawful occupant. It is not against the law to yell at police, especially in a home, as long as that behavior does not affect an investigation, he said.
"That is part of being a police officer in a democratic society," Weinblatt said. "The point is that the police sergeant needs to be the bigger person, take the higher road, be more professional."

If you know the whole story then you would understand that Gates did in fact stop the detective from doing his job! As soon as the sergent got on scene gates started profiling him as a racist and would not cooperate with him not answering questions! Gates has confirmed this himself in saying that he would not answer his question when asked if there was anybody else in the house! Crowley did actualy try to walk away and at that time Gates followed him out the door and was still yelling at him! We live in time that slavery was many many years ago and there is an African American President so you can stop playing the race card! This Sergent actualy was handpicked by a Black police commisioner of cambridge to teach a class to 60 cadets a year on how to not target someone strictly on race and how to handle these situations iof they do occur! I cant wait until some of the tapes that there are start to surface so you can all see jus how arrogant this proffesor gates realy is! Gates is in a position that he thinks he is better than everyone else because he is a "Harvard" Professor. Well news flash, he puts his pants n the same way as everyone else! I agree that D&C's show ight not have been the best show for him to go on but the sergent has done nothing wrong in arresting this arrogant piece of shit!
Wow. I think we have a good idea what happened. It's somewhere in between each man's version of what happened. The mistake Crowley made was not walking away once Gates proved he was in his own home. He shouldn't be arresting a guy for yelling at him. Gates probably yelled. I'd have been annoyed at being questioned by a cop who asked me to prove I was in my own home. Crowley seems to be a good officer from media reports about his record. He should have apologized at the scene. Something like "Sorry for the inconvenience, sir."
Also, Obama was asked about this, too. He didn't bring it up. His answer did stink, tho, for lots of reasons. But, Genious 38, Gates deserves respect. The insults don't help.
Thanks for commenting.
As many witnesses have said Crowley did try to walk away and at that time Gates follwed him out the door and was still being Offensive! When Crowley first got to the scene he asked gates for ID and gates would not cooperate! Yes Gates does deserve respect as does everyone, But what I was taught as a young lad was to get respect you must give it and from what I have read and heard Gates had no respect for this officer or the job he was trying to do at all! Obama should have replied that it is a local matter and that the cambridge police and MR Gates will work it out! If the president keeps bringing up The Racism card than it will never be let go! Believe me I am a person that thinks everyone is equall but obviously Gates does not feel that way! This guy should be paying a fine and have a disorderly charge on his record but because of who he is and that Idiot we call a president he just screams racism and oh all charges are dropped! If anyone gets in the way of police dong their job they should be arrested and that is what gates did! This coming again from everything I have read or heard! There were many Witnesses to this incident and not too many are siding with Gates!!! I was not there though so I just have my opinion based on what I have read as facts!
There are also many witnesses including african american witnesses that say gates was way out of line! There have been a serioes of B&E's in this neighborhood including Gates home! All gates had to do was cooperate and this wouldnt have happened! He needs to take a step back and realize he is no better than you and I just because he is a Harvard Professoer! I can not believe the president of the United States felt he needed to weigh in on this matter strictly because gates is his friend! If I were the Sergent I would have my lawyer working on a slander cas against both Gates and the Pompas Ass President! "this is evident that racism still exosts today" OBAMA! You are a Black man in the oval office but racism still exists yeah OK! Shut up and figure out a way to get this country out of debt and ways to create jobs, how to fix heathcare, ETC ETC..... nevermind the local matters that your friends have gotten themselves into! 4 Years can't come soon enough!
