The Globe's Metro Desk reports Mass. lawmakers are about to create a spending plan to restore funding to the Franklin Park Zoo in Boston and Stone Zoo in Stoneham that was cut earlier this year. A vote on the bill, which also restores $40 million to cover health care costs for legal immigrants, may happen Wednesday. ZooNE should get $2.5 million of the $4 million that was cut back, which may or may not be enough to keep both zoos open. Regardless of the funding, there will be no animals killed.
Over the weekend, Bostonist was thrilled by zoo-related news ranging from animal goodness to blissful ignorance. Franklin Park Zoo is now heavy one baby giraffe. How cute is that gigantic newborn? For a 76-inch creature weighing 164 pounds, pretty friggin' cute.
Joan Vennochi actually began her Sunday column with the following question in all of its ironic and oblivious goodness: DO YOU ever wonder why Massachusetts has two struggling zoos, instead of just one?
Since Ms. Vennochi is surely reading, Bostonist will point out that people may wonder why any Globe employee would ever suggest that a struggling enterprise close.
