The Parma Sandwich from Domenics in Waltham
While dinner options in Waltham are plentiful, sometimes a quick lunch can be a little harder to find. Though many of the local restaurants serve lunch, it is often a sit down affair, not conducive to the brief amount of time allotted to the typical lunch break. However Domenics Italian Bakery & Deli brings a little bit of the North End into Waltham for those of us seeking a delicious but more accessible lunch.
Domenics hosts an extensive array of exceptional take out options, from made to order potato gnocchi, to sandwiches crafted between two halves of their amazing house baked bread. Crusty on the outside and soft on the inside this “ciabatini” roll is the perfect canvas upon which Dominic’s team of sandwich artists create masterpieces out of amazingly fresh and occasionally surprising ingredients. “The Parma” boasts a soft and flavorful cut of prosciutto de Parma, fresh mozzarella, tomatoes and basil. The crunch of the bread is the perfect juxtaposition to the soft and combination of salty prosciutto, creamy mozzarella and sweet, tangy tomatoes. This sandwich only comes in one size and is often on display at the busy deli counter. The staff will throw in extra fresh mozzarella if you ask for it.
Consisting of honey turkey, honey mustard, roasted red peppers, baby greens, Balsamic vinaigrette, and only 4 grams of fat, the “D-Lite” is a surprising taste combination. The honey turkey melds with the smooth, sweet taste of the red pepper and is cut by the sharp earthiness of the baby greens. But the thing that truly makes this sandwich is the surprisingly strong kick of the slightly spicy honey mustard combined with the incredibly tangy balsamic vinaigrette.
Domenics even has vegetarians covered with the deliciously balanced “Verde” sandwich. The “Verde” consists of mixed baby greens, “housemade” dried tomatoes, gorgonzola cheese, and balsamic vinaigrette. This is almost a salad on a slice of bread; hearty enough to feel like a deli sandwich but completely lacking meat.
Clearly addicted to the sandwiches, this Bostonist has only sampled a few of the various pasta dishes and pizza slices available daily at Domenics. The hand rolled/cut potato gnocchi is so tender it practically melts in your mouth and is perfectly accompanied by the mouthwatering tomato sauce. The pizza is an oversized doughy slice with a sweet tomato sauce and a light hand with cheese and toppings.
If you want to finish your lunch off with a treat, grab one of their cannoli which are filled for you while you wait.
Domenics is open Monday through Friday from 10:30-5:30 and on Saturdays from 11:00-4:00. Though they have daily pasta specials, you can check out the regular menu on their website. Overall, Domenics is a great place to grab a quick lunch, and if you’re not in a hurry, they have a few tables with umbrellas set up on the sidewalk for a little bit of sun worshiping with your sandwich.
