Nick Green: ADD, MLB and Adderall

With the national sports media focused on steroids, Nick Green's legal use of amphetamines before every game has gone virtually unnoticed.

According to MLB Fanhouse, amphetamines, ironically known as "Greenies" have been banned since 2006. However, baseball grants therapeutic-use exemptions (TUEs) to players who get a doctor to determine a player needs to take them. In 2008, MLB be issued 106 TUEs for attention-deficit disorder (ADD). Green has ADD and takes Adderall, and has to be approved each year by an MLB sanctioned doctor to take it and not violate league rules.

Green supports the approval process. "I think it's fair. The way I see it is you even out the playing field. I think it's a good program. It's tough to beat the system," he said. Green is a career .240 hitter.

It's also tough to find any of the allegedly aggressive Boston sports "journalists" ever reporting on Green's use of Adderall. Dan Shaughnessy mentioned Adderall in one of his mail-it-in columns but didn't explore the idea of players taking it.
