Social networking sites can serve a purpose besides hooking up with former classmates or empowering a populace as they protest against a despotic government.
Via modern word-of-mouth, about 500 people gathered in an Union Square parking lot on a hot Saturday afternoon to sample (and sample and sample) delicious ice cream from some of the best local purveyors of cold treats.
"We wanted to try a Twitter and Facebook experiment," said Citysearch editor Christine Liu. Her passion for sweets is clear by many posts to Sugarbomber, a Citysearch satellite with a quest to find the most amazing desserts around town and the nation. Along with Aaron Cohen, the master-tweet of @eatBoston, they banged around a few ideas for a fun event with a local angle.
The vision was "Ice Cream Trailer Park," and they rounded up an impressive group that included: Christina's, Toscanini's, JP Licks, Chilly Cow, b.good, and Wheeler’s Frozen Desserts.
No one served ice cream out of a mobile home, but an ice cream cart and a rickshaw were interspersed among folding tables on the shady side of the lot next to Grand. The festivities had a low-key feel, the backyard version of the Scooper Bowl.
Of the approximately dozen (or so) ample tastes, Bostonist was often blown away by flavors like Wheeler's vegan chocolate and ("people's choice" winner) Chilly Cow's coconut frozen custard. We were less than excited by the large fruit chunks in b.good's mango shake. It was also frustrating to wait until the Christina's frozen samples to sufficiently soften.
Our only other disappointment is that we didn't have room to eat more. In good news, this should be the first of hopefully many other Sugarbomber/eatBoston events.
The event raised more than $1,200 from admission and raffles to benefit the Juniper Fund, a music scholarship for musically-inclined high school senior in honor of bassist and cancer victim John Hall.
