BostonTV: Gleeful On a Wednesday Night

After months of waiting, tonight's official Glee premiere has the potential to reduce even the most steadfast High School Musical fan to a panting mass of jazz hands.

Admittedly, Glee relies on similar character types to HSM. (Singing jock? Yawn.) But like the fabulous Camp, the performances in Glee are more realistic-- no breaking into song on the basketball court-- and all the singing on the show is real. We predict that Glee will manage to shimmy its way to the forefront of a new sort of musical movement.

The pilot introduces a teacher fighting to resurrect the glee club, an unhappy jock who discovers the will to dance, a talented but semi-annoying leading lady, and a bunch of background actors who will most likely become important via future plot points.

We were pleasantly surprised by Glee: the pilot is funny and naughtier than the old Disney standard. Jane Lynch as the cheerleading coach? Genius casting.
These teachers are a bit more interesting-- and central-- than they are in other high school shows.

Luckily for everyone, clips of various musical numbers performed by the Glee club are positively clogging the internet. Catch up before tonight's premiere at 9 PM on Fox.
