Sports Redux: Nothing Happens When It Rains

Tampa Bay loaded the bases with one out in the first inning. Ah, nevermind. Friday's game was washed away and will be made up as part of a doubleheader on Sunday. Josh Beckett, Clay Buchholz and Jon Lester will start the three games versus Tampa Bay. It remains a mystery to Bostonist why Lester had to take the mound. Defer to the meteorologist umpire because we have nothing on that one.

Since the rain nixed Friday's Sox game, all Bostonist has to worry about is the cost of pitching and beer. Both are expensive. According to OverTheMonster.com, Fenway Park has the most expensive beer in the MLB if you factor in the team's winning percentage.

As far as expensive pitching goes, Daisuke Matsuzaka will start on Tuesday. Bostonist is expecting nothing so we can't be disappointed. Tim Wakefield won't cost $100 million, however, in terms of real people money, he is expensive, too. He pitched better than Daisuke in 2009 and is now hoping his back responds to a third cortisone shot. Ian Browne of MLB.com expects Tim to return in 2010 so he can make a run at 200 wins.

In non-Sox baseball news, Bostonist needs to congratulate Derek Jeter now that he has more hits than any player in the history of the New York Yankees after a single in the third inning of Friday's game. Jeter's 2,722 hits surpassed Lou Gehrig's previous record. Yankees owner Georger Steinbrenner described Jeter as a "legendary" player. The Yankees lost to the Orioles. Texas vs. Seattle was postponed by rain.

That the Basketball Hall of Fame is in Springfield isn't the only local connection to Michael Jordan being inducted there on Friday. When Jordan was busy impersonating a minor-league baseball player, his manager was Terry Francona. Francona talked about Jordan's legendary competitiveness, his respectful approach to the game and for his teammates, and even said having to handle the media attention Jordan brought to the Birmingham Barons helped prepare him for the Boston media.

Kevin Garnett will eventually be joining Jordan in Springfield one day. Before that, Bostonist simply wants him on the court and in game shape in time for the 2009-10 opener. According to Marc J. Spears of Yahoo!Sports, Danny Ainge is optimistic that Garnett will be ready to contribute for the entire regular season and playoffs, too. Ainge reportedly said "He looks good. Really good." Spears also noted Ainge hasn't decided whether or not to extend Rajon Rondo yet.
