Boston Freedom Rally: HempFest Turns 20

It's a good day in the Common when the odor of fried dough is engulfed in the sweet aroma of Saturday's herbaceous guest of honor.

More than previous Boston Freedom Rallies, affectionately known as HempFest, there was much to celebrate.

It happened to be the 20th anniversary of what may be the second-largest annual marijuana party in the US (excluding jam-band concerts).

It only took 20 years, but organizers Mass/Cann and all interested citizens could also celebrate a major milestone in pot decriminalization.

Although some were arrested for "intent to distribute," this was the first Hempfest since the voters reduced possession (of an ounce or less) into a citation-only offense.

Bostonist strolled through the proceedings to hear some bands, catch a few speakers extol the virtues of sticky icky, and to -- ahem -- soak up the atmosphere. The thousands in attendance in good spirits as one would expect.

After an hour or two, we wobbled out of Boston Common feeling slightly disoriented and cotton-mouthed yet mellow and happy.
