Beer

Harpoon Brewery opens its doors and its taps for the 2009 Harpoon Octoberfest. It's Harpoon's 20th such event, and it includes "three stages of music including New England's premier German Oompa bands" as well as the requisite beer and German food. Harpoon Brewery, 306 Northern Ave., (shuttles available from South Station), 3 p.m. More information.

Anachronism

We're certain that the day is not far away when hipsters stop pining away for the time when Jews and Blacks were excluded from everything, women couldn't vote, WASPs followed a stifling and byzantine set of social conventions, and everybody wore tweed and precious, eccentric mustaches. That day is not today, if the Boston Tweed Ride is any indication. Join a crew of hipster cosplayers as they ride their bikes through Cambridge and Boston dressed like it's the early 20th century. Helmets are required. Departing Sunday, 2 p.m. behind Royal Sonesta Hotel, Land Blvd. at Athenaeum St., Cambridge. More information.

Book Donations

The Great American Book Drive redistributes the wealth of printed material from those who have too much—possibly you—to those who need more—prisoners and homeless people. Clear off your shelves and help your neighbors. The Non-Profit Center, 89 South St., 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Free.

Festivals

We're not sure what impact, if any, the rain will have on Somerville's Harvest Fest, but we're hoping that it won't mean a cancellation. The festival brings together "the finest artistic, culinary and musical talents from in and around the city of Somerville" and includes samples of beer, food, and other goodies. Performance Hall, Arts at the Armory, 191 Highland Ave., Somerville, 1 p.m. to 8 p.m. $12. More information.

Man. I'm not a hipster (honest), but all the hipster-hating on this blog is getting a little tiring. I subscribe to this to find out about stuff happening around Boston, not to read constant attacks on any particular group. Even the regular "dancing hipsters" thing seems kind of unfriendly. It's true that negativity is very Bostonian (and I say that as a lifelong resident), but I vote you guys ease up a little.

Hi DMW --

Thanks for your comment. "Dancing Hipsters" is not intended to be unfriendly but to be descriptive. If you read the majority of the items posted under "Dancing Hipsters," you will find that I almost invariably praise the DJ and/or band being described.

Thanks for reading!
