Stuff to Eat in the Suburbs: Newton—Rosenfeld Bagels

Last Saturday, this Bostonist did the unthinkable—she got up really early. Why on earth would someone do such a thing on a Saturday? The answer is simple—bagels. Rosenfeld Bagels in Newton are some of the best bagels this Bostonist has ever had.

Rosenfeld, located in Newton Centre, is a little hole-in-the-wall shop focusing on bagels and bagel accompaniments. The bagels are chewy on the inside and crunchy, but not too crunchy, on the outside and this only get better when you toast them. Potato, egg, blueberry, chocolate chip, everything, salt, and poppy seed are just a few of the bagel options offered at Rosenfeld Bagels. And the cream cheese is to die for. They make their own, and the flavors are perfectly balanced: nothing is overwhelming or mars the experience of bagel eating. We recommend the chive cream cheese, which is blended so that the chive pieces are incorporated instead of huge and chunky, creating a fantastic, subtle flavor with just enough bite.

In addition to bagels and cream cheese, the shop offers a very wide lox selection; you can't go wrong choosing any variety of lox. There is one other thing that this Bostonist picked up at Rosenfeld Bagels: a loaf of challah. They bake the challah fresh in the store, and you can smell it from a block away. It is everything challah should be: easy to pull apart, soft and chewy, practically melting in your mouth.

The major drawback to Rosenfeld Bagels is the shop's popularity. You really have to get there early if you want the whole variety of bagels. The store is open Tuesday through Saturday from 7am to 5pm; and from 7 until 3 on Sunday. And on Sundays in particular, the place is mobbed—so get there really early in order to make sure you get the bagel you want.

Rosenfeld only accepts cash, so make sure you have some—we had to cobble together the twenty-something dollars for our huge order using small donations from everyone waiting in the car. And speaking of cars, there is almost no parking, so bring someone who can run in if you’re driving. However, Rosenfeld is right around the corner from the Newton Centre T stop, so the non-car-enabled can have equal access to bagel heaven.

Rosenfeld Bagels is located at 1280 Center St., Newton Centre and their phone number is 617-527-8080. If you’re a bagel lover you won’t be disappointed.

Arlington? Don't you mean Newton?

A little out of my way but sounds yummy. I'll have to make the effort to give them a try.
