Friday Happenings

r-kelly.jpg Trapped in the Wang

We wish that we could tell you that tonight's R Kelly show was going to be a Trapped in the Closet stage play, but, alas, we think he's just going to sing. At least that will save at least one little person the indignity of crawling out of a kitchen cabinet. CitiWang, 270 Tremont St., 8 p.m. $45 to $88.

Movies

Robert Tapert and Sam Raimi's Army of Darkness (1992) may have been the crucial stepping stone that lead the world to Xena: Warrior Princess, and for that, we will always be grateful. If you've seen the movie a few times, you might find it fun to "quote along" with it, but we're afraid that the true "Army of Darkness" will be the group of BU students who are puking on you. Coolidge Corner Theatre, 290 Harvard St., Brookline, midnight, $10/$8.

Dub

Brighton's Guardian Sound System has gotten really good, everybody. This dub massive jams on reggae standards like "World A Music" without ceding any of the sticky dopeness of the originals. It's the rare white boy reggae band that gets our enthusiastic support. Alchemist Lounge, 435 S. Huntington Ave., Jamaica Plain, 10:30 p.m. Free.

Indie Rock

We once needled our friends by calling Built to Spill "Built to Suck." Our juvenile sense of humor hasn't matured since then, but our need to needle our friends has become somewhat less acute. We realize by now that Built to Spill combines two things about which we are dismissive—indie rock and folksy plainness—but we also realize that we are a vocal minority in these matters. The band will inexplicably play three shows, and the first two are sold out. Middle East Downstairs, 472 Mass. Ave., Cambridge, 7 p.m. (through Sunday), Sold Out. (Tickets to Sunday's show still available.)

Openings

"Mothers Expressing: Sharing the Work" is a photography exhibit by Nita Sturiale and Amber Davis Tourlentes, two young mothers, that aims to seek the beauty in the underappreciated art of mothering. AXIOM Gallery, 141 Green St., Jamaica Plain, 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. (through October 31). Free.

idaho is totally a western state, not part of the heartland! even the internet says so:

http://library.thinkquest.org/4323/hear_lan.htm

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Midwestern_United_States

and the internet is always right.

To clarify, I wasn't referring to the band's geographic origins but to its folksy plainness, which I find insipid and boring. But thanks for the clarification.

wow, mr. sawyer, can i just say once again that your sourness about anything you personally dislike is one of the reasons that bostonist is such a drag. i don't much care for built to spill either, but who, for the record, convinced you that smug submissiveness passes for wit? too bad this city lack an appealing alternative. having just moved here from new york where gothamist is a service-y, lively, good daily read it's too bad to find the local sister site such an irritating, enervating contrast.

And who cares so much about popular culture to get upset about it?

Thanks for reading!
