Half the team is hurt. Much of the other half is brand new. But somehow, this bunch of strangers wearing Bruin black and gold managed to squeeze out a win over Nashville, 3-2. The first two goals all came from Bruins vets (Michael Ryder and Patrice Bergeron), but the game winner, Steve Begin's first Boston goal off an assist from Daniel Paille, was all n00b. "Most important thing is we won the game but it's great to get my first goal out of the way," said Begin.
The B's, who found out earlier in the day that Marc Savard will be sitting next to Milan Lucic on the injury bench, have a difficuly time ahead of them as they forge their identity, notes Kevin Paul Dupont in the Globe.
The Celtics rested Ray Allen and Kevin Garnett. The Cavaliers didn't rest LeBron James and Shaquille O'Neal. And the Celtics cruised to a 14-point win. What to make of this? Nothing, says Cleveland; LeBron James said "this is nothing to judge for what’s going to happen on Tuesday," when the teams meet again in the season opener. Eddie House led the C's with 21 off the bench, Shelden Williams got some grit points when he fought Mo Williams in the end of the first half, and the Celtics got to visit Leon Powe and tell him they miss him. As do we.
The Phillies finished off the Dodgers to be the first team to win back-to-back pennants since the Yankees did it a few years ago. It's very possible the Yankees will finish off the Angels tonight to meet them in the World Series. In other words, it's not a good time to be a Mets fan right now.
