Sports Redux: With Friends Like These

Happy Celtics season opener, Bostonistland! The Men in Green are ready to kick off their 2009-2010 season tonight when they face the Cavaliers. The team is pumped, ready, focused on the task at hand--

Or are they? On this Tuesday, the fact that the team is beginning its season is a blip on the overall radar, given all the rest of the drama that's surrounding the team. Ray Allen's getting bloodied during practices, Rajon Rondo's miffed about how the team views his worth and then there's the whole Big Baby business.

In a nutshell, your Davis drama: Glen "Big Baby" Davis has a friend and former teammate come to visit him. One thing leads to another and the two men get into a fight. Somehow Davis winds up with a broken hand, plans for surgery, a couple of months off from playing and a possible suspension.

We've heard of being gracious and hospitable hosts, but that's a little ridiculous, don't you think? That friend is SO barred from coming back into Boston during Big Baby's career.

While you're thinking about the dawn of a new Celtics season, can you not quite get the Sox out of your mind today? That's because you were hoping, praying, forgetting to breathe and wondering how your life was about to change five years ago today. This certainly puts the length of the 2009 Major League Baseball schedule into context: while the Yankees (shudder) and Phillies (Go Pedro!) have yet to play Game 1 of the 2009 World Series, it was today that the Red Sox won Game 4 of the 2004 Fall Classic, completed their sweep and changed the identity of the Olde Towne Team.
