The Sounds of Silence
Lon Chaney's turn as The Phantom of the Opera (1925) remains one of the great performances of silent-ear Hollywood horror. Tonight, the Alloy Orchestra gives you another reason to check out the film: a live soundtrack. The evening also includes a screening of The Fall of the House of Usher (1928), accompanied by DJ Dziga. Arts at the Armory, 191 Highland Ave., Somerville, 6:30 p.m. $21/$26.
Movies
The Brattle offers its own complement of horror movies, screening two of cult director Michael Dougherty's recent efforts. Trick 'r Treat (2008) gets its Boston theatrical premiere, albeit on DVD, which is how it was originally released. The theater adds "in case you need some encouragement to get into the holiday spirit, Dougherty introduces a creepy sack-masked hobgoblin that torments those who don’t respect the traditions of Halloween." The screening of Dougherty's The Darkness Within is regrettably sold out. Brattle Theatre, 40 Brattle St., Cambridge. Tickets and more information.
Dancing Hipsters
Thunderdome, the long-running hipster dance night, presents its Halloween party, Thunderdome XV: Halloween, featuring a showdown between dance crews Hearthrob and Mistaker and a live DJ/VJ performance from RNDM & ROBOTDID. "Costume mandatory." Villa Victoria Center for the Arts, 85 W. Newton St., 10 p.m. $15.
Tragedies
Do you think the Bee Gees' music would be improved if somebody played it in the style of mid-'80s Scorpions? Luckily for you, a group of New Yorkers has taken upon themselves to do just that. Tragedy recreates the Bee Gees as glam metal with mixed results. Harper's Ferry, 158 Brighton Ave., Allston, 8 p.m. $12/$15.
Covers
We're sort of charmed that a KISS cover band has christened itself FUKK, but we're not entirely certain that we liked The Exploited's music enough the first time around to sit through an Exploited cover band, courtesy Rampant Decay. The bill might be saved or torpedoed by The Modern Voice's take on Sleep and Pentagram, depending on the quality of the take. O'Brien's Pub, 3 Harvard Ave., Allston, 9 p.m. $9.
Mayhem
Locals Tori Pyne perform a pre-Halloween show as Muppet band Dr. Teeth & the Electric Mayhem. We hear that humming "The Muppet Theme" is the secret to getting Muppet-in-disguise Jason Bay to hit a home run; check for the slugger on your way through the door. Porter Belly's, 338 Washington St., Brighton, 10 p.m. Free.
