Soundtracks
The NEC marks the 71st anniversary of Kristallnacht with a performance of Quincy Jones's gripping soundtrack for The Pawnbroker (1963), Sidney Lumet's groundbreaking story of a Holocaust survivor's struggle in a world still in the grips of prejudice and the markers of genocidal violence remain chillingly present. Organized by Ran Blake, the concert features the Storyboard Noir Ensemble, the NEC Jazz Orchestra, and the NEC Jewish Music Ensemble. Jordan Hall, New England Conservatory, 30 Gainsborough St., 8 p.m. Free. More information.
Fancy Drinks
Bostonist's preferred enabler, Drink, hosts a punch party at which local mixologists compete to create the tastiest concoctions of Champagne Pol Roger and herbal, delicious Chartreuse. At $5 per drink ticket, we're there. Drink, 348 Congress Street (downstairs from Sportello), 5:30-7:30 pm. No admission cost. (CF)
Wine
Our old friends at the Second Glass wine magazine offer another Crash Course Wine Seminar, focusing this time on the "Badasses of the Wine World," wines like the "Super Tuscans" that rebelled against the Chianti orthodoxy and won. Wine Gallery, 375 Boylston St., Brookline, 7 p.m. $10. More information.
Rock
Brooklyn's Lights play a jangly but expansive rock music that gives the lie to the idea that indie rock has nothing funky to offer. It's music that would segue equally well from Loop, Bauhaus, and Jimi Hendrix. Openers Major Stars remain greater Boston's foremost purveyors of mind altering shred. Harper's Ferry, 158 Brighton Ave., Allston, 8 p.m. $10.
Movies
HFA presents the New England premiere of Koji Wakamatsu's United Red Army (2008), a meditation on the Japanese militant left-wing terror group by the latest inheritor of Nagisa Oshima's legacy. Harvard Film Archive, Carpenter Center, 24 Quincy St., Cambridge, 7 p.m. $8/$6.

Kells Closing

just a belated thanks to Rick (and/or C. Fernsebner) for the heads-up on the performance of Quincy Jones' music for The Pawnbroker at NEC. It was a fantastic concert with Q's score and other music performed to scenes and segments from Lumet's film. Would've missed this but for this Monday Happenings post.
