For the 248th time, Boston College and Boston University players stared each other down before the puck dropped and a men's hockey battle began. It was the first instance in the rivalry's storied history, however, that Eagles and Terriers players did so on ice featuring a Green Monster backdrop.
BU was able to take home bragging rights on Friday night after winning the first men's college hockey game played on the Frozen Fenway ice. After jumping out to a 3-0 lead, the Terriers held off a strong BC comeback and skated their way to the win. David Warsofsky, Joe Pereira and Wade Megan notched goals for the Terriers (6-9-3), while Brian Gibbons and Cam Atkinson led a failed Eagles (10-6-2) rally.
Friday's showdown, a matchup of the 2008 NCAA champion Eagles and 2009 NCAA champion Terriers, brought 38,472 fans to a brutally cold Fenway, one that felt like 7 degrees when wind chill came into the equation. Puffy jackets, hats, helmets and blankets packed the concourse areas as fans took turns cheering their teams from their seats or from spots in front of televisions. Lest one fear that the cold cooled off the rivalry, know that the cheers and jeers were loud and lusty.
Keeping track of the rivalry record? With BU's win, the Terriers padded their lead, 124-107-17.
