As Haiti reels from yesterday's devastating earthquake, Bostonist wants to highlight award-winning local organization Partners in Health (PiH), which has worked to provide medical services to the poorest Haitians for more than 20 years. The Harvard-affiliated non-profit is currently contributing emergency medical aid to some of the millions affected by the disaster. Founded in 1987, PiH oversees a 104-bed hospital, a dozen schools and eight clinic sites across Haiti's Central Plateau. According to their website, PiH is "the only provider of comprehensive primary care, regardless of ability to pay, for more than half a million impoverished people living in the mountainous Central Plateau."
Unfortunately, their programs are now on hold as they rush to assist the millions affected by the catastrophic quake. They have set up a webpage updating their efforts. While Partners in Health currently has 120 doctors and 500 nurses on the ground in Haiti, they are also seeking any medical professionals willing to join their relief efforts. Not a medical professional? Consider donating money towards their efforts, knowing that Partners in Health is an organization with deep roots in Haiti and will be helping in both this dark hour and in long-term recovery efforts.
