Sports Redux: KG Returns/Celtics Win

After three straight losses, not to mention the quirky Friday thing, the Celtics would probably have taken a win anyway they could get one. So, Friday's 98-95 OT win over the Portland Trail Blazers, which is noteworthy, in part, because it marked Kevin Garnett's return to action, is one the Green will gladly take.

KG's return certainly makes Boston a better team even with his pedestrian 13 points and four rebounds. He brings intensity and attitude, and also fills out the roster. Please note the performance of Rasheed Wallace (12 points, 6 rebounds) coming off the bench.

The most noteworthy part of the game was the thrilling end. Ray Allen's game-winning three-pointer with :42 left in overtime was just his third field goal. With 96-95 lead, Allen passed to Tony Allen for the clinching dunk.

Paul Pierce paced the Celtics with 24 points before he fouled out in the fourth quarter. Rajon Rondo added 19 and nine assists.

Colby Cohen's power-play goal in the first minute of overtime gave BU a 5-4 win over BC. Chris Kreider scored twice for BC.

The Bruins, if you are still keeping track of them, play Ottawa at 1 p.m. They've won once in their last seven games and have dropped to seventh in the conference. They somehow beat Ottawa on January 5, 4-1, before losing to them, 5-1, on Monday. Bostonist wishes the Bruins well today. Really. But, with Marco Sturm, Steve Begin and Byron Bitz unavailable, it doesn't look good.

Bostonist is struggling with deciding who to root for in what's left of the NFL playoffs. Rooting for Brett Favre is not an option because we know this isn't his last season. The New York Jets? Right. The Colts are not our favorite team, clearly, but the Jets are way worse. So...Go Saints? Yes, they beat the crap out of the Patriots in November. But, we have no real reason to hate this team and they're simply better than Tom and the boys.

Baseball fans usually know all about baseball prospects; the good ones anyway. Two to be aware of:

  • New Red Sox shortstop prospect Jose Iglesias is supposedly very good. Once the 20-year old Cuban adapts to America and American baseball, his skills might be more apparent. He's learning English, our baseball etiquette, and how to deal with snow.
  • Grant Desme is a 23-year-old outfielder who just completed A ball in Oakland's system. He hit .288 with 31 home runs and 89 RBI in 2009 and is retiring from baseball to become a Catholic priest. Desme simply said he aspires "higher things" than a game.
