Raising fowl on private property is legal in cities across the United States, from Brockton to New York to San Francisco, but its legality in Cambridge is up in the air. How do we know? A co-op of Cambridge residents, including Bostonist's own photo editor Liv Gold, will be going before the Cambridge Board of Zoning Appeal (BZA) tomorrow evening to gain a permit for the three cute ducks and two chickens that have been living on their land since March 2009.
The co-op is owned by eight people, who describe themselves as "working professionals, teachers, artists, entrepreneurs, and students," and they've set up a petition for Cambridge residents to sign supporting their zoning appeal. The group also hopes that you will show up at the BZA meeting tomorrow to show your support for urban fowl. The decision could allow more Cambridge residents to keep fowl on their property after taking the proper health and safety precautions. Groups such as the Urban Homesteaders League will be in attendance to show support.
According to Save the Ducks!: "If the BZA sees that allowing bird keeping in Cambridge will generally make more people happy than upset it is more likely that they will choose to interpret the zoning ordinance in a way favorable to us." The meeting is tomorrow at 7:30 p.m. in the Senior Center, 806 Mass. Ave., Cambridge.
