YouTube isn't just for pets doing stupid tricks anymore. For Tufts University, the video sharing website is now an optional part of the application process. Yes, ABC News says Tufts solicits YouTube videos as something akin to an essay.
Tufts isn't grading the videos per se. According to Tufts dean of admissons Lee Coffin, it's simply a "puzzle" piece of who each person is. For example, Amelia Downs from North Carolina used YouTube to bring math and dancing together.
This sounds like a good way to incorporate the "digital life" of students into the so-called real world. Leave it to Harvard to make it dirty. "Families with substantial financial resources are in a better position to provide such materials, " said William R. Fitzsimmons, Harvard's dean of admissions.
