Sports Redux: Bruins Lose More Than A Game

Ulf Samuelsson. Bill Laimbeer. Bernard Pollard. And now, Matt Cooke?

Cooke, a left-winger/jerk for the Penguins, who has already been suspended a couple of times this season for unacceptable hits, laid out Marc Savard with a blindside check late in the third period. When Savard finally came off the ice, it was on a board, and the diagnosis is concussion. The Bruins (who lost 2-1, but whatever) were outraged. "A guy like that has to be suspended," said Coach Julien. Patrice Bergeron, who knows a thing or two about cheap shots and concussions, added, "I think it was a head shot, and there’s no need for it." Cooke, for his part, said all the things NHL jackasses say when they get caught in these things. Savard didn't join the team on the next leg of the trip (tomorrow in Toronto), and will come home to be evaluated, but it will probably be a while before he plays again.

Good news all around from Fort Myers, which has to be killing Dan Shaughnessy, but we'll happily take it. Daisuke Matsuzaka threw another long session (65 pitches) without his arm falling off. Josh Beckett seems agreeable to talk about a contract extension. And J.D. Drew has figured out how to handle being outfield neighbors with Mike Cameron: "Take everything you want. Makes it a lot easier on me. I’m just going to chill over here." That's the Drew we know.

And the Celtics narrowly avoided losing at home to two horrible teams two weekends in a row, as a Ray Allen flurry helped wake up a moribund team and lead the C's to a 86-83 "victory" over the Wizards. They visit the suddenly-hot Bucks tomorrow.
