MSPCA Pets of the Week: Tigger and Tiger

The Boston MSPCA Animal Care and Adoption Center is open Tuesday through Sunday; from 2 to 7 p.m. Tuesday and Thursday, and 1 to 5 p.m. all other days. Adoption rates vary, but you can find all adoption information and policies here. Not able to adopt? The MSPCA always needs volunteers, foster families and donations!

This week's featured cats are a truly American kitty pair (it's not too late for a July 4 theme, right?): Tigger and Tiger! (A230307 & A230306)

Did you know that the Maine Coon is the only bona fide American cat breed? While their exact origins aren't precisely clear, we do know they came from Maine and are the second most popular cat breed in the U.S. (after Persians). They are also well known for the New England cat anomaly -- extra toes! Tigger and Tiger are listed as tiger mixes... but they carry many distinctions of a Maine Coon mix -- M on their foreheads, large size, medium-hair fur. Despite their large size, they are only about 8 months old, if you can believe it. Maine Coons are one of the largest cat breeds, and adult males can weigh upwards of 16 pounds.

But, like many (though not all) things in the United States -- bigger is better! Tigger and Tiger are super friendly, laid-back boys. If you're looking for a "dog like" kitty to follow you around and be a great companion, they're perfect for that. They're both medium-hair mixes, but no worries -- the best part about Maine Coon mixes is that their longer fur is low maintenance. They only need brushing every once and a while, and they both love it!

Need help telling them apart? (they could perhaps use a name change) Tigger is the "big boy," and the more chill of the two -- and he has extra toes! Tiger is on the svelte side and likes to explore. They both LOVE treats, and purr like crazy when you pet them! They never bite or scratch, giving them the perfect temperament for anyone, including a family with children. While not super playful at the Adoption Center, they're young and may just need time to get to know you and open up!

You won't find two sweeter boys, or a better pair to take home to the family!

All MSPCA Adoption Center cats come fully house trained, and the adoption fee of $150 (cats aged 5 months and up) covers spay/neuter, de-worming, flea & tick preventative, microchipping and and vaccinations good for a year after adoption. Please come prepared to show photo i.d. and proof of either home ownership, or pets allowed on your lease. For more information on the adoption process, please click here.

  • Oh, aren't they cute. Adorable!

I have been pondering the idea of providing a foster care for cats. Looking at Tiger and Tigger I think it's hight time I do it.
