Two serious illnesses are making waves in Massachusetts. One is common and one isn't.
- The Massachusetts Department of Public Health confirmed six cases of cholera in the Bay State that are linked to a wedding in the Dominican Republic last week. Over 110 cases were reported in Venezuela from the January 22 wedding at Casa de Campo in. The sickness is traced to contaminated lobster. The Massachusetts cases include two men, a young woman and three children. The first case was reported Thursday.
- The flu is percolating in Massachusetts and now accounts for 1.4% of doctor visits in the third week of January. According to the state DPH, that admittedly low number still represents an increase in flu activity. Flu season peaks in February or early March and shots are still available.
