Cheap Summer Fun for Die-Hard Boston Sports Fans

Boston sports fans, like most Americans, are keeping a closer eye on their pocketbooks during the recession. While those Monster Seats at the Red Sox game or cushy Patriots club tickets might be out of the question right now, that doesn't mean you have to be shut out from major league excitement this summer. Here are seven low-cost options for Boston sports junkies looking to get their fix without breaking the bank. (For more money-saving tips, even for Patriots and Red Sox games, check out The Die-Hard Sports Fan's Guide to Boston, a brand new guidebook to Boston's spectator sporting events. Christopher Klein will be signing copies this afternoon between 3:30 and 5:30 PM at the Brookline Booksmith, and he'll be giving a talk on the history of Boston sports at Back Pages Books in Waltham at 7 PM on Tuesday, June 23 as well.)

Book It: April Book Events

From Jay McInerny to Jim Lehrer to Germaine Greer to Homi Bhabha, this April is an insane month for book events. If the lovely spring weather (hey, we can dream) doesn't keep you outside, you'll have plenty of indoor entertainment at bookstores and libraries around town. Oh, and don't forget that April is National Poetry Month, aka the time when all the poetry books come out and people pretend to care about poems for a few weeks. Uplifting!

Book It: March Book Events

March brings us Women's History Month and a host of book events, some of them female-focused. From fine fiction to incisive historical analysis, the readings this month run the gamut. Big names are largely absent, but big ideas still abound.

Addiction Analysis at Brookline Booksmith Tonight

Boston resident Benoit Denizet-Lewis confessed his sex addiction in the New York Times and talked to the Huffington Post earlier this week; tonight, he graces Brookline Booksmith with his presence—and a reading from America Anonymous. This book examines both Denizet-Lewis' own struggle with addiction as well as the stories of several Americans (including a man from Southie) afflicted with addictions to food, gambling, drugs, shoplifting, and more. Addiction is portrayed as our country's most "biggest public health problem," costing over $500 billion annually. Head to the Booksmith tonight to hear Denizet-Lewis' tale and learn more about how and why we've become addicted to so many things—including, perhaps, addiction itself?—and how we can start trying to recover.

Bostonist would like to state for the record that John Hodgman is neither portly, nor pudgy, nor rotund. He is, in fact, quite svelte and dashing. Mr. Hodgman mentioned last night during his reading at the Coolidge Corner Theatre that bloggers have been uniformly unkind in their assessment of his physique. We would like to challenge this misinformation, so Bostonist will refer to him from now on as "the svelte and dashing Hodgman."

Brookline Booksmith's Cinemasmith is closing shop. Perhaps the store was cannibalized by Netflix? We don't know. Whatever the reason, the store's shuttering its movie business, and you stand to benefit. Old classics, foreign movies, and films from the Criteron Collection are on sale starting at $5. The store has to move over 3000 titles, so you'll have your pick of the movie crop. Stop by 279 Harvard Street in Brookline to take advantage of the store closing.

Paul Auster, Man in the Dark

It's back to school, and back to the books. September is brimming with book events, from this week's sold-out Junot Diaz production to Dennis Lehane to Billy Collins and more.

Boston Book EventsWell, we’ve been slow in posting August book events, but you haven’t actually missed any yet. August is traditionally a slow month for publishers, and Harvard Book Store appears to be taking the month off; its next listed event isn’t until September 3 (but it’s a doozy—Junot Diaz! zomg! apparently he likes to make September appearances here--and the price has tripled since last year... but now you can get a book for it!). Check Porter Square and Brookline Booksmith ‘till the big H comes back. And definitely "run" to BB on the 23rd!

Christopher Klein, Discovering the Boston Harbor Islands

It's bibliomania this week, with tons of book events ranging from bigshot Salman Rushdie reading from his latest tomorrow to small press folks visiting Brookline Booksmith on Saturday. Whether you like your authors established or up-and-coming, this week is a great time to head out for a reading.

Zoe Ferraris, Finding Nouf

July is upon us. This month, you can celebrate stuff white people like, as we did recently, or try to comfort Salman in the wake of his divorce from Padma. There's also a new Harvard Square Book Circle book discussion group at Harvard Book Store and a wonderful small press night (sponsored by Rose Metal Press) at Brookline Booksmith, plus Andre Dubus III comes to Porter Square Books. Be sure to get your reading glasses on during July--it'll be worth it.

Boston BooksApparently book events only happen Tuesday through Thursday these days. Clear up your calendar for a little literary love or nonfiction knowledge. We recommend Alison Bass' indictment of Paxil and Prozac, as well as Gary Marcus' exploration of why our brains are so cobbled-together and inefficient. We may have an interview with Marcus later this week, so be on the lookout.

Saturday, June 7th, 7:00pm, First Parish Church Meetinghouse, $5

Boston Book EventsThe weather's finally warm and the days are perfect for chilling outside with a book. Check our list of June book events around town to see what you might want to pick up for either frivolous or fierce reading experiences. This week, both Lewis Black and David Sedaris are in town to tickle your funnybones, so get tickets for the titillation while you still can. Later this month readers will tackle topics ranging from pirates to poverty, offering something for book-lovers of all stripes.

Boston Book EventsMay winds down with some excellent book events addressing issues from economics to politics to the art of writing. There's even a double-whammy of Wrights reading poetry tomorrow night.

Boston Book EventsBook your calendar this week with book events involving history, politics, wine, falconing, and poetry. And don't forget that everyone's favorite anchor, Barbara Walters, signs her new book Audition: A Memoir Thursday evening at Brookline Booksmith. We bet it'll be as popular as that Apple Store opening! Maybe?

Boston Book EventsNational Poetry Month may be over, but that doesn't mean it's time for you to put away the books. It's dreary out right now, but warmer weather should be just around the corner, enabling you to crack a book in the great outdoors. Our lovely local bookstores are bringing us bunches of great readings in May. Big names like Fareed Zakaria, Mike Gravel, and Howard Zinn will discuss politics, while Brookline native BabaWawa returns to her native land for a book signing. Read on for an overview of what's booked in May. As always, our picks have asterisks by them.

Note: This reading is sold out, but there will be a standby line and open book signing after the reading.
