On Tuesday, CNN reported that President Obama will extend "health care and other benefits to the same-sex partners of federal employees" by signing a memorandum on Wednesday. As more states begin to recognize gay marriage, this could be seen as another reason for supporters of gay marriage to be optimistic that gay marriage will be allowed in any state. As Bostonist recently illustrated, attitudes on this issue still inspire heated exchanges and intense emotions. The President has recently been criticized by gay rights groups because his Justice Department supported the Defense of Marriage Act in court despite candidate Obama's pledge to try to repeal it. Obama has also not carried out his promise to drop the military's "don't ask, don't tell" policy.

Skepchick: OK, We Get It - Psychics Are Making Money

Here's an interesting story: as the economy plunges into a recession and people panic over the prospect of lost jobs and money, psychics continue to make big money. Well, okay - it was a mildly interesting story when NPR's Day to Day covered it in November of last year. When a CBS affiliate did it in January it was somewhat less fresh. By the time CNN wrote about it back in February, let's face it, much of the appeal was gone. Yesterday, when Boston Globe writer Brian MacQuarrie found it in the back of the fridge, sniffed it, and tossed it the microwave for 90 seconds, it was probably time to throw it out.

Republican presidential aspirant and former Massachsuetts governor Mitt Romney is the projected winner of the state of Massachusetts over John McCain this Super Tuesday, according to CNN. And that victory was by no means a given since Romney didn't exactly leave Massachusetts wanting more.

Ted Kennedy catches a lot of crap just being himself. Ted-Kennedy-As-Orator is probably Jon Stewart's second-favorite impression after the George W. Bush chuckle. Throw in the alleged drinky-drinky, and Ted Kennedy makes for quite the media spectacle. Since he announced his endorsement of presidential aspirant Barack Obama, the Peanut Gallery has renewed its love affair with poking fun at Teddy. But Glenn Beck at Headline News hurt our brains when he started imagining our Senator in the buff.

--A man walking on a pond in Weymouth on Sunday fell in and was rescued before freezing to death. Neighbors heard his screams and called for help. The footage of the rescue was so dramatic that it's been making the rounds on CNN. [WCVB]

The state of Michigan has performed CPR on the flagging presidential campaign of former Massachusetts governor Mitt Romney, according to MSNBC and CNN. He is the projected winner of the state's primary. John McCain came in second. Maybe it was Romney's Michigan roots? Maybe it was his business experience? Maybe it was Muffy? Maybe it was the MittGram?

Update: No winner for the Democrats yet, which makes CNN look bad because they were calling it for Obama all day.

Anticipation, anticipation … Let's see what fresh weirdness is unfolding up in New Hampshire. You can bet there's a lot of it.

--Three firefighters were injured in a blaze in Weymouth. At first, officials suspected arson because the home was about to be sold, but they've since declared it accidental. [WBZ]

Update: Deval Patrick can rest easy. Obama took 38% of the Iowa caucus vote.

--Representative Ed "Biz" Markey is going to Bali--in Second Life. Way to be hip to the Internets, but does that avatar look like him? Discuss. [Boston Globe] --Boston got dumped by CNN. A debate that was supposed to be in Boston next week has been knocked off the schedule because of the early caucus dates this year. And we were hoping for a look at Wolf Blitzer. During a dustup over illegal immigration at the CNN/YouTube Republican debate, Rudy Giuliani said of former Massachusetts governor and presidential aspirant Mitt Romney: "There was even a sanctuary mansion. At his own home, illegal immigrants were being employed." Turns out he wasn't just being bitchy. He was right. Not only did Romney employ illegal immigrants in the past, but the Globe broke the news that he employed them right up to this day. The...

Leeland Eisenberg has been named as the man who took staffers hostage yesterday at Hillary Clinton's campaign headquarters in Rochester, NH. He was already a man on the edge when he took the hostages. According to an AP report, his wife was divorcing him, and he was "due in court with her for a domestic violence hearing." He had a record for drunk driving and domestic violence, and he was involved in an odd incident...

Former Massachusetts governor and presidential aspirant Mitt Romney attended the Republican CNN/YouTube debate last night, even though he admitted he was concerned about taking questions from a snowman complaining about global warming. CNN teased him a little bit in the beginning by showing a brief highlight reel with the snowman, but then they disappointed by saying that only "serious" questions would appear. And then CNN showed questions from a dude performing a singsongy tune on...

Romney didn't endear himself to anyone when he answered a question about whether or not he would appoint a Muslim to his fantasy presidential cabinet. Here's Mansoor Ijaz, who asked that question of Romney and wrote about the response for the Christian Science Monitor: I asked Mr. Romney whether he would consider including qualified Americans of the Islamic faith in his cabinet as advisers on national security matters, given his position that "jihadism" is the...

In Los Angeles, LAist most definitely celebrated Thanksgiving like no other. After all, one has to keep up all the energy to keep on walking the line at the Writers Strike and fighting the unfortunate return of the wildfires in Malibu, which single handedly destroyed over fifty homes within the first 24 hours. National outlets may be covering the fires, but CNN also found it is easier to buy a gun than fruit and...

You know that former Massachusetts governor presidential aspirant Mitt Romney is rich. But did you know just how rich he is? He has spent a total of $10.2 million on TV ads--$85,000 a day, according to CNN. Ponder that a second. $85,000 a day--much of it his own money. He's donated $17.5 million of his own money to the campaign so far. To give a little perspective, Team Romney can drop $85,000 a day,...

Our Senators, Ted Kennedy and John Kerry, are catching some heat for an earmark on a transportation bill designed to help prevent delays at airport hubs. The earmark is for $8 million, which is peanuts in guv'mint terms, but that $8 million isn't going to Logan--it's going to airports in Barnstable and Nantucket. And Barnstable and Nantucket are hardly "hubs."

--Jimbo was excited to hear about Bachelor No. 2 shooting at East Boston High. But anybody who resembled a rabbi was probably even more excited - Bachelor No. 2 desperately needed rabbis or rabbilike individuals for a wedding scene. New Hampshire actor Don Bagley was picked out after going through an audition and spending time with a man named Ramses at a sashimi bar.

The battle between Mitt Romney and the Snowman is heating up – and Romney might melt first. The snowman in question was in a YouTube video aired at the Democrats' CNN/YouTube debate. While using a snowman instead of a human to ask a question is geeky, it wasn't completely out of left field because the snowman asked about global warming. However, Romney took offense to the playful snowman and found taking questions from snowmen -...

In a move that boggles the mind, Mitt Romney has declared that he won't take part in the Republican version of the CNN/YouTube debate in December. Why? Here's the reason: Asked about the [YouTube] format, which featured video questions submitted by the public, Romney said "There is a degree of respectfulness that ought to be associated with the process for selecting a nominee. From what I've heard, that level of respectfulness was breached." But...

For all the hype and adoration heaped on Daisuke Matsuzaka, the fact is he's still technically a rookie, if a seasoned one. And rookies do things like get themselves into trouble. His last few starts, Dice has been prone to having one bad inning here and there, which combined with a lack of run support, has caused some trouble. Last night, fortunately, the offense picked him up and pulled him out of the fire. The...

UPDATE: From the AP: "US Department of Homeland Security Secretary Michael Chertoff said Thursday his agency will seek to "terminate" the deportation case against the wife of a Massachusetts soldier missing in Iraq so she can stay in the country and apply for permanent resident status." Unless we're mistaken, that sounds like Yaderlin Jimenez will be able to get her green card. Yesterday, word spread all over the Web that Yaderlin Jimenez, wife of missing...

Your suit is so blue we can't even tell if it's blue or black. Oh, wait, yeah, it's blue. This is Massachusetts, totally blue. Yesterday Caroline Kennedy, daughter of JFK, announced that the JFK library is looking to host a debate at the facility of Democratic candidates for president on December 17, 2007. Seems like a long way away, but it could be only days before the New Hampshire primaries take place (they haven't yet...

The Associated Press is reporting that the Al-Qaida-linked insurgents who captured three U.S. soldiers in Iraq last month released a video that says that the men - including Spc. Alex R. Jimenez, 25 and of Lawrence - have been killed. "The Americans sent 4,000 soldiers looking for them," a voice on the video says, according to the AP. "They were alive and then dead." According to reports, the video includes footage of insurgents planning the...

Bostonist enjoys taking a stroll through the music community section of Craigslist every now and then. It's always entertaining to see how the rockers are describing their sounds these days (today's listings, for example, include "baby makin' music" and "a blend of indie rock with break beats") and sometimes we happen across something that otherwise would have flown under our radar.
