The gridiron at the opening of the annual Jimmy Fund Scooper Bowl was simply grueling. The conditions were bleak, with the temperature in the fifties and a slight drizzle fluttering in from every which way. Most of the competition that fills the fenced-off court in previous years was gone, leaving the pavement at Government Center slick. Despite the uneasy conditions, with potential to lose one's grip, balance, or feeling in one's extremities at every turn, those with guts of steel and gullets of gargantuan strength made it out for all the tough licks and delicious hits at the Scooper Bowl.

After Friday night's texting-caused crash and yesterday's investigation by the National Transportation Safety Board, the Green Line is back in business at Government Center. As of this morning, trains were running as normal through the station.
Don't count on the Green Line to get you past (or to, depending on where you're coming from) Park Street today. Service is still suspended following yesterday's crash at Government Center on the Green Line, meaning you'll have to take all kinds of Orange Line detours (or walk "one block," which according to the MBTA is the exact distance from Government Center to Park Street, Haymarket, or State Street) to get where you're going. The crash site is closed for a National Transportation Safety Board investigation.
The Globe reports that the driver in today's Green Line crash at Government Center was texting while driving, or T operating. Texting, or at least cell phone use, was also blamed in last summer's Green Line crash on the D line that killed the driver.
Forty people were hurt after two MBTA Green Line trainscrashed between Government Center and Park Street tonight. According to the Globe, one train hit the back of a stationary train at the Government Center platform. WCVB has uncut video of the aftermath of the crash.
News flash: white people like enjoying things ironically. This includes trucker hats, '80s "fashion," and even children's games played as adults. The now annoyingly infamous "Stuff White People Like" blog, which can (ironically?) list itself as something white people like way too much, recently featured Boston's own Government Center in an image of people playing children's games (specifically, Red Rover).

Turns out Green Line service is down between Government Center and Lechmere. Here's the T Alert that was sent out:

Bus schedule improvements? Mattapan high-speed? New Blue Line trains? Oooh, Santa Charlie isn't finished with us yet!
For the past few months, Bostonist has engaged in a scientific experiment. We've been sniffing around T stops to find out which ones are the most pleasant and which ones are an offense to the olfactory nerves. Each day this week, we'll evaluate the odors you will find at various T stops.

Some Bostonists found out about this the hard way--by actually being on the green line and having our drivers announce "last stop Government Center"--but the Green Line is closed between Park Street and Kenmore Square this morning after two trolleys collided at Boylston. One trolley rear-ended a stopped trolley, and one car derailed, according to the Globe. Not only were legions (including some Bostonists) made late for work, but the Globe reports nine people complained...
A 25-year-old woman was nearly raped after leaving a Green Line train from the Brookline Village stop early this morning. She told police that the man followed her from Government Center to Brookline Village and attacked her on Cypress Street. When he attacked, she managed to get away and run home. Brookline police have released a description of the man. From the Globe: A Hispanic man, possibly of Mexican descent, who is about 5 feet...
Just when we got our hopes up that Mayor Thomas Menino had forgotten about his plans to move City Hall to South Boston, he declared yesterday that the move is still very much on his mind. Jay Fitzgerald reported that Menino spoke at a Greater Boston Chamber of Commerce breakfast yesterday, and he said that he'd like to sell the current City Hall space at Government Center and then use the money to move....

If you see something, say something! Especially if it's a middle-aged man with white hair and a long beige coat packing a newspaper and an exposed pee-pee. For the past several months, a man fitting the above description above has been getting grabby and flashy with high school students on the Green "E" Line between Brigham Circle and Government Center. Oh, man -- skeee-eee-eeeve. If you have any info about the Green Line Groper...
--Mike Mennonno writes a wonderful post about the power of the Polaroid. Photo of the Day fans, take note: "It's hard to say whether the fleshiness of polaroids is an illusion of their application or inherent in the process, but Warhol's polaroids capture that same sinuous, sensuous seediness polaroids seem made for. You don't get that with digital, with its sharp focus and white light." --Newton Streets & Sidewalks had another encounter with a turkey....
--Suffolk District Attorney Dan Conley and police commissioner Ed Davis were able to be in the same room this weekend despite their ongoing public spat. But someone has BPD detectives have been distributing flyers around Government Center denouncing Conley's actions. The flyer pulls no punches and even likens Conley to a feudal lord: "Dan Conley is a politician who only wants to flex his political might over the serfs beneath him." Can everyone involved in...
It seems safe to assume that opening night to the 122nd Boston Pops season could be described at least as somewhat of an abnormality. A shout of "Rock This Bitch" doesn't typically ring through the perfect acoustics of Symphony Hall, let alone serve as an acquiesced song request. We've never heard anything about traditional Opening Night audience fistfights. And, with all due respect to those who have sat in with conductor Keith Lockhart and his...
Chanel 5's Cindy and Jeff have a blog. It's about traffic. Today it was about grabbing a Taxi. When Bostonist has a flight to catch we've been known to walk ourselves to the nearest hotel so that we can grab the flat rate to Logan because it's almost always cheaper than a ride with the meter running. As fast as the Big Dig has made an airport run, traffic usually slows us down enough to...
--Someone took the name of a Somerville sports bar quite literally when they brought in 46.7 grams (about 2 ounces) of cocaine into the Good Time Emporium. These fellas took the tagline of the Good Time Emporium – "New England's Largest Indoor Entertainment Destination" – way too literally. Somerville News reports that police officers swiftly took the two in, not just for the abundant white powder but also for the three rounds of ammo they...
More standing room "seats" at Fenway are a fitting addition after the 2006 season. In 2004 the curse was broken. The oldest and smallest MLB park was outfitted with a new drainage system. In 2005 when the boys failed to repeat the 2004 feat the season was followed by a overhaul of the .406 club creating the open air posh seating now called the EMC club for a corporate sponsor (rather than to honor Ted...
The MBTA made a bold marketing move in branding the new fare cards. Bold, but perhaps brilliant. Before the CharlieCard, before the CharlieTicket, all passengers have is the MBTA to blame. Now riders simply raise their fists and curse Charlie (think Shatner screaming "Khaaan!") the MBTA isn't scapegoat - it's the new cartooned mascot. A mascot who was taken from the verse of a song about a guy who was stuck on the T because...
According to the MBTA website and Boston.com, the Green Line service has been suspended between Government Center and Kenmore right now. There was some sort of fire-related incident at the Boylston Station and the MBTA is now busing people along the Green Line. The Herald is just reporting there is smoke coming from a tunnel just west of the Boylston stop. On the bright side, at least the Sox aren't playing tonight at Fenway. All...
Much to the dismay of those hoping to keep up with non-fatal shootings, non-fatal stabbings, and bachelorette parties "gone wrong," BPD News, the Boston police department's online blotter, has fallen prey to individuals who claim to be Turkish hackers. "hacked by metlak / Ownz here / F*&k papa." originally replaced the site's content. Metlak, is that meant to be an insult of Big Papi? Metlak and company have left their fingerprints on Massachusetts news websites...
Along with nearly 15,000 other folks, Bostonist was on hand as TV on the Radio and the Yeah Yeah Yeahs rocked City Hall Plaza. The pairing of Brooklyn (Williamsburg's) TV on the Radio with the Yeah Yeah Yeahs makes perfect sense for so many reasons. Not the least of which is the fact that TVOTR's David Andrew Sitek produced the YYY's Fever to Tell and Machine Ep. And the YYY's crack guitarist (and occasional...
The not-so-secret secret that a ride around the lagoon on a swan boat on a steaming New England afternoon is a great way for a tourist to feel comfortable or a Bostonian to feel nostalgic for childhood when they first climbed aboard the bike pedal style powered boats. The Swan Boats launch every May and are taken out of the water and stored at Labor Day – USA today reports, via the AP, that the...
