Ghoulish Craigslist Ad: No Fee, Chalk Outline Included

Today, an ad appeared on Craigslist for a two bedroom Mission Hill apartment priced at the bargain basement rent of $1,300, available for no fee. Too good to be true, right? It turns out that along with a parking space and "2 HUGE storage closets," the apartment comes complete with the chalk outline of a human body. Speculation on this Reddit thread has the apartment being the one involved in the May murder of a Northeastern student in the Parker Hill Apartments. But the building described in the Craigslist ad is a three unit condo, not a massive apartment complex. Was the unit a crime scene? Or just the hang-out for a couple of morbid MassArt students?

  • A fire truck crashed into a building in Mission Hill. One firefighter was killed, three firefighters were hurt, and some children that had been in the building suffered minor injuries as well. The truck's brakes may have failed. [Globe]

-- A 7-year-old boy was shot last night amid the crossfire between warring youths. The child had been playing kickball near Smith Street on the Mission Hill end of Roxbury when he was apparently struck by ricocheting bullets. He remains hospitalized with multiple injuries.

A pair of douchebags made a Peeping Tom video recording of their naked neighbors and put it on the internet online.

-- Police have identified the victim of yesterday's fatal shooting in Mission Hill. Rebecca Payne, 22, was an athletic training major Northeastern University student who was well-liked by her colleagues and an active member of the university. Payne was shot twice in her legs and once in her chest. Police have not ruled out the possibility that she knew her killer and have not released any further information about their investigation. Although witnesses claim to have heard gunshots early Tuesday morning, no emergency call was made, which distresses Bostonist. If you hear gunshots, you should call the police because it might save somebody's life. [Globe; Herald]

-- More details have emerged in today's apparent murder on Mission Hill. The victim, who has not been identified by police, is a woman in her 20s, and some officials say that she was shot to death. Her body was discovered this morning around 7:00am. The Globe reports that neighbors in the Parker Hill Apartments building heard gunshots early this morning, but no official word on the cause of death has been issued. Homicide investigators have cordoned off the apartment complex where, earlier today, they towed a blue Mini Cooper with 2007 Northeastern parking tags. Authorities have made no connection between the vehicle and the killing. [Globe]

--Violent revelers turned a party for "Girls Gone Wild" at Aria on Tremont Street into a full-on fracas early this morning: "Two people were shot, a state trooper broke his arm and a Boston police officer was in a cruiser crash." A brawl involving 20 to 35 people swinging champagne bottles broke out, and then one armed man started firing into the crowd. [Boston Herald, BPD News]

Heya Bostonist, I am a hypothetical Chicago Cubs fan who has just moved to Boston from another large city, where I liked to watch the Cubs among fellow fans. In fact, my old city had a Cubs bar, where Cubs fans would go to watch our team lose all the big games. But, in Boston, I had to watch the Diamondbacks sweep the Cubs in the NLDS all by myself. Where do Boston's Cubs fans...

--Now, this didn't happen in Boston, but, as the Sports Redux mentioned earlier, a Massachusetts man and Red Sox fan was attacked by two men in New York. The men had asked him if he was loyal to the Red Sox. Carlos Ortez, 25, of Quincy, is now in the intensive care unit at Westchester Medical Center with multiple facial fractures. He was in New York to work on a construction project for a Manhattan...

--The BPD was busy today and yesterday. Early this morning, four people were shot around Levant St. and self-applied to Boston Medical Center. One of them was said to be in critical condition. WHDH links the incident to a house party. Also early this morning, an attempted burglar was on the fourth floor of a building in Jamaica Plain. When the police arrived, the burglar jumped out of the window and sustained life-threatening injuries.

--Meet Dirus Gaines, a man with an iron constitution. Mr. Gaines' seemingly lifeless body was found by the railroad tracks on Wednesday afternoon in Framingham. Gaines exhibited all the signs of being dead – no movement, eyes rolled back in head, odd position of body. Then, Gaines "suddenly" awakened and displayed his beverage of choice, a bottle of blackberry brandy. And here's the best part – Gaines is awfully lively when he's not completely pickled:...

Machetes, hatchets, hedge clippers. People from Massachusetts are nothing if not creative when it comes to assault charges.

--Police caught a bike thief who got his mitts on the wrong bicycle. The thief stole a cute retro bike from the lobby of an apartment building in Mission Hill a few months ago. The owner did a little detective work on craigslist – where the perp put the bike up for sale!

TheANTI has been kicking it with custom made t-shirt designs since 2004. After moving into some semi-dedicated shop space (and out of their living rooms and kitchens) the crew of theANTI now has a pretty sweet line of designs available on t-shirts for $15, and hoodies for $30. Hats, totes, mixes, and DVDs round out the product line. Inspired by street art, the designs come from a collective of artists and have some great Boston themes.

theANTI is a Boston based company that prides itself on ideas and motivation. We've physically existed since June '04 when our first shirts were printed, but the idea of our own designs on t-shirts has been something we've all been playin with for a while... We finally stopped talking about it and did it, and the results have been nothing but pleasing so far.
From Boston Roots and the pruSign to the Boston Citgo and into Mission Hill they're taking on a new era this year with the release of the newest design: Redline, the winner of their 2007 design contest. The best contest we never entered. All four of the top winning designs are available on their site.

Zooming in on the South End/Roxbury in Google Maps something interesting showed up: the gentrification line. The high resolution images are in their satellite database for all of Downtown and Back Bay. Most of the South End is included, but once you cross over Mass Ave, into what we generally accept as Roxbury, things aren't quite as clear, they aren't as green either. Back in January the Globe ran a piece called "Breaching Mass...

We can just imagine the scene. Globe reporter tries to get hip with Street Art. Stalks Myspace, meets up with, and interviews Pixnit about her experience, technique, and dreams. Fluff piece is written up and sits on the editors' desk for about a month until a nice, slow news day hits. Say January 3? The article runs. Readers write in (and leave comments), angry with the soft handed and accepting tone of the original article. A few of those complaints are run with a picture in the January 5th edition. The Globe looks for a way to react. They put their local crime beat reporters to the task of getting an article in print about how graffiti is bad. Half written already, the article just waited for the Boston Police to deliver the goods – January 7 the blotter already was marked by the arrest of a pair in Mission Hill for dropping the Tel tag on buildings overnight.

For those tomato fans out there that were appalled at the mealy, overpriced produce at the chain supermarkets this past winter, you can relax. The farmers' markets are now in full swing in the city and you can buy all the fresh produce, herbs, and baked goods your little cooking heart desires. Bostonist was able to hit up the Copley Square Farmers' Market last Friday, where eight stands had set up, selling everything from basil...

This week in Boston has been pretty dismal; the news stories hitting the airwaves are all bad news...two local teachers being killed by their own family members, Schilling and Wells on the injured list, a gloomy, rainy forecast. The most disturbing story this week is the rise in rapes in and around the city; In the first two months of 2005, rapes are up 13% from 2004. Three rapes were reported this past weekend alone. On Friday night, a 14-year-old girl in Mission Hill reported being pulled into a beige car and raped at gunpoint before being left behind. On Saturday morning, a 40-year-old woman said she was pulled into a maroon car in Hyde Park, then raped at gunpoint in Franklin Park. And on Sunday, a woman in her 20s from West Roxbury said she was raped by a man who was driving her home from a bar.
