Photo of the Day, October 5, 2009: Open

Bostonist photowalker nolansternphotography took a cool picture while on our last photo walk. This hydrant shot has some neat elements. Symmetry, shallow depth of field, framing, and post processing all work together to yield a stunning photo.

Photo of the Day, September 29, 2009: North End Alley

Paghababian makes good use of the gate in this photo. The vertical bars do a great job framing the alley, while the colors of the lights produce a beautiful orange glow in contrast to the sky outside.

It wasn't enough for Emerson College to be labeled as unsafe due to crime on the Common. Now Emersonians are being blamed for all the ruckus in the North End, too. In a Globe article on the North End's partying epidemic, a BPD captain confirms that "students, mostly from Suffolk and Emerson College, cause most of the problems reported, not patrons at bars." Setting aside the issue of how students afford the North End (oh, excuse us—they're Emerson students. Now it all makes sense), it seems odd that students don't make up a significant portion of the bar patrons in question. Nevertheless, we do like Bricco owner Frank De Pasquale's advice: "If residents wanted silent nights... they should have moved to Dover or Marblehead."

Shyto attended yesterday's Bostonist photo walk through the North End, and grabbed a terrific capture. This photo is of a memorial to our fallen soldiers in a little garden area behind the Old North Church. This is one of the best shots we've seen from the area as the colors are great, and the lens flare increases the interestingness of the photo.

Photo of the Day, August 19, 2009: Fisherman's Feast

Jeff Tamagini joined us for the 1st monthly Bostonist photo walk on Sunday morning and came away with some really good shots. Then he headed over to the North End for the Fisherman's Feast and came away with some great shots including this one of a young man enjoying the party. The fisheye lens and lighting do a good job isolating the subject from an otherwise busy background.

Boston Blotter: Crack in a Malden Bra, Raynham Punks Unafraid to Cast the First Stone

-- Shades of Dianne Wilkerson: A Malden woman was arrested in Quincy for allegedly wearing a bra stuffed with 19 bags of crack. That must have made for an unsettling profile. [Herald]

jjsearcher2000 found this daffodil in the North End soaking up the warm sunlight. The low angle of the light and great use of shadow are very well done.

Sensing at Fairmount Battery Wharf Now Open

Every few months, there’s a press dinner that tempts every half-qualified food writer and lifestyle blogger in the metro area to come out of the woodwork. This week, it was a dinner at Sensing, the new hotel restaurant inside the Fairmount Battery Wharf, which sits at the far end of Hanover facing the harbor. The blogger bait? Three Michelin star chef Guy Martin (that’s pronounced Gee Marten, for those of us who didn’t take French in high school), who’s a bit of a celeb chef in France, and who has chosen Boston for the American debut of his restaurant, Sensing.

Boston Blotter: Richard Hung Himself

-- Richard Sharpe, the cross-dressing North Shore dermatologist who killed his wife with a rifle blast in 2000 and allegedly sent a hit man after his prosecutor, hanged himself in his jail cell last night. [Herald]

The biggest Boston crime story of 2008 might have been the one that got the least media coverage.

The blog Fan Foodie recently asked Bostonist to provide a guide to eating before seeing a game at the TD Banknorth Garden. We were suitably amused by the blog's guide to tailgating in Foxborough, that we were happy to oblige.

Well, now you know how to get around and where to drink. How about where to get some cheap grub? There's lots of great food in this city, it just takes some exploring to find it.

-- Michael Faria of Stoughton was arraigned today on multiple charges, including vehicular homicide, for the hit-and-run fatality on Saturday in Easton after turning himself in yesterday. Faria may have been text-messaging at the time of the incident. [Boston Globe]

The Boston police have posted an artist's rendering of a suspect in the July 4 indecent assault of a woman in the North End. And the BPD has released surveillance footage of two men suspected in the quadruple shooting that took place July 4 outside a Hyde Park convenience store.

Thanks to the incisive investigative reporting we have come to expect from the Globe, Bostonist will steer clear from Fresh Cheese, at least while owner Carmen "the Cheeseman" DiNunzio is under indictment for an alleged Big Dig bribe attempt. The Cheeseman is banned by court order from his cheese shop, which is an alleged mob hangout. The result? Expired mozzarella. While the Cheeseman sweats out his court date, sandwich lovers in the North End wonder if they will ever eat again. [Globe]

-- Early this morning, police found a man shot to death at the corner of Circuit Street and Walnut Ave., in Roxbury, near Washington Park. The victim was 20-years-old. No arrests have been made, and no motive has been advanced. He was Boston's third homicide in the past 24 hours and the 33rd of the year. [BPDNews]

-- A woman was attacked in the North End early yesterday morning. While walking down Richmond Street, the victim was attacked from behind and assaulted sexually before she broke free and fled, police say. The alleged perpetrator is described as a 5'10" white male in his 20s with dirty blond hair. Police believe that this attack might be a part of a series of sexual assaults stretching back to July, 2007. [BPDNews; Globe]

There are few places in this city where you'll find locals and tourists lining up next to each other to wait for a table. But at Pizzeria Regina in the North End, this is a common occurance. True, it's not a classy place, what with the waiting outside, the old school booths, the pitchers of beer, and the occasionally surly waitstaff, but the food is good, and really, that's all that matters.

Unfortunately the world of vegan gourmet dining is a small one, with most restaurants concentrated in the Veg-friendly cities of New York, San Francisco, and Portland.

Deval Patrick has been making news lately with the State of the Commonwealth and his public support of presidential candidate Barack Obama. But what of Massachusetts' other top dog, Speaker of the House Sal DiMasi? Bostonist read Paul McMorrow's lengthy Boston Magazine profile of the Speaker of the House and found the article too interesting not to sum up.

Another break-in happened at Romney Headquarters early this morning in the North End. At first blush, it could have been political. The two men arrested by the BPD were from Cambridge, which doesn't exactly show Mitt Romney the love.

--Dr. Judah Folkman, who found a new way of fighting cancer by cutting off blood supply to tumors, died yesterday. [Boston Globe]

If you thought yesterday's snowstorm was rough, try thinking about the wave of molasses that poured through the North End on January 15, 1919. The molasses flood happened when a shoddily built tank burst at the seams, sending waves of molasses through the North End, knocking down homes and crushing people.

Victor Thompson of New Hampshire is a bigger Pats fan than you are. Sure, he's never actually been to a game in Foxboro, but he'd like to. But that doesn't matter. Maybe you watch all the games on TV, maybe you own a Wes Welker replica jersey, maybe you've even trekked down to Gillette (or even Schaeffer) Stadium, but you haven't done what Victor's doing: getting a Tom Brady helmet tattooed on his head.
