Boston Blotter: Heroin Like Swine Flu You Have To Pay For

-- Public health officials released a report today calling heroin and OxyContin addiction an "epidemic" in Massachusetts. The report calls for a public health campaign on the scale of the fight against H1N1 to combat the problem. The report estimates that 3,265 Massachusetts residents died from opiate overdose between 2002 and 2007. [Globe]

Boston Blotter: Woman Attacked with Rope in Havard Square, Human-on-Human Biting in Alewife

-- A 26-year old female Harvard employee was attacked yesterday night in Harvard Square by a man who tried to strangle her with a rope. The quick-thinking victim was able to crouch, push her male assailant away, and escape with little harm having come to her. No arrests have been made. [Herald]

Boston Police responded to the Tedeschi’s on West Broadway in South Boston on Tuesday and found glass door smashed by a large rock. Police say surveillance tape shows the suspect tossing a rock through the door to enter the store. He then stole Newports and scratch tickets. The same suspect allegedly lifted lottery tickets and Newport cigarettes from a 7-11 on West Broadway in July and August. BPDNews.com describes the suspect as a white man, 30-40 years old with dark hair. He wore a Boston Red Sox hat and Championship shirt and black jeans and black sneakers. Cool surveillance pics, too. Bostonist contributor Korri Leigh Crowley sends a photo essay from the John F. Kennedy Library and Museum in Dorchester, where Senator Edward Kennedy will lie in repose beginning later today. As you can see, the memorial for our departed senator has already been arranged and mourners have already flocked to the library to pay their respects. Kennedy's public wake will take place in JFK Library's Smith Center later this evening and will continue tomorrow from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

-- A man was shot dead in the South End during the afternoon on Independence Day. The 24-year-old was killed by multiple gunshot wounds on Shawmut Ave., near Ball Park. No arrests have been made. [BPDNews]

-- Raphael Lara, who allegedly stabbed a man to death in May, was arrested in the Bronx yesterday by the Boston Police Fugitive Unit. [BPDNews]

Boston Blotter: Stabbing at Homeless Shelter; Grand Jury for Green Line Texter

-- A man was stabbed this afternoon at St. Francis House homeless shelter in downtown Boston. The victim suffered multiple wounds, and police were able to subdue and arrest a knife-wielding suspect. [Globe]

Historic Boston: Castle Island

Yeah, we're not gonna lie. We go to Castle Island for the hot dogs. If you're familiar with this South Boston landmark, then you know what we're talking about. The most prominent feature of Castle Island is the historic Fort Independence, but the area is valued by locals for its walking paths, playground and picnic area, beautiful views of Boston Harbor, and the hot dogs.

    

The bartenders at Drink, in South Boston, are friendly enough that they have indulged, on several occasions, Bostonist and our entourage when we posed a series of "garnish challenges," wholly unreasonable demands to match a cocktail to something outlandish or much less classy than their usual Luxardo cherries or Cynar ice cubes. Circus Peanuts or beef jerky, for example.

Jason is psyched to see parking options thawing out all over Southie, home of the lawn chair and "waterlogged cardboard boxes or mangled ironing board," which mark parking spots. But then there's Douglas Street, desperately clinging to winter. [Platinum Elite]

Boston Blotter: Alleged Brockton Murderer a White Supremicist

-- Prosecutors say that the 22-year-old Brockton man accused in yesterday's double homicide was motivated by hatred. Keith Luke, who also stands trial for aggravated rape and kidnapping, allegedly planned to kill "as many Jews and blacks and Hispanics as he could." Authorities say that he planned his killing spree to end at a Brockton synagogue, where he intended to shoot all its congregants before killing himself. [Herald; Also Herald]

Last weekend at the ever-popular South Boston watering hole Drink, Bostonist had a cocktail that made us feel like we could see Marlon Brando. And he was our dad.

-- Boston police have a suspect in Sunday's fatal shooting on Elder Street that left one dead, four injured, and the Dorchester community in shock. The shooter who killed Alexandra "Xanda" Gomes, a 19-year-old mother, may have been one of the men injured in the shooting. No arrests have been made. [Globe]

-- Police have identified the man who was shot dead outside of his home on Rossmore Road in Jamaica Plain Saturday afternoon. Garibaldis Pena, 27, of Jamaica Plain, was pronounced dead at Boston Medical Center. Neighbors reported hearing three gunshots, which disrupted a lazy Saturday afternoon in the Forest Hills neighborhood. No motive has been advanced, and police have arrested no suspects. -- Larelle Pratt, 19 of Boston, whom police describe as "an impact player" in the local gang scene, was arrested in the Sunday night shooting of two boys in Roxbury. Pratt shot the boys, who were sitting on the back porch of a Roxbury triple decker, and calmly left the crime scene, police say. Prosecutor accounts have revealed that the 17-year-old victim of the gunfire, Eric Parson, saved the life of his 4-year-old cousin, Ferris Glover, carrying the youngster to safety despite a bullet wound. Glover underwent surgery and has been reported in stable condition. [Herald; Globe]

-- Boston police have charged three in the May killing of a South Boston man. Edward Holloman, 19, of Lynn, and Edward Mendez, 34, of Jamaica Plain were both charged with murder. Darren Hemingway, 19, of Brighton, was charged as an accessory after the fact. The men are accused of killing 27-year-old Curtis Ashford after getting into a fight on 8th Street last May. [BPDNews]

-- A man was found stabbed early Sunday morning outside the Cask 'n' Flagon bar near Fenway Park. Police say the man was stabbed in the restroom of the bar, and witnesses described a man fleeing the bar with a small knife in hand. The victim made it to the hospital with non-life-threatening wounds. [BPDNews]

-- Upton police found the body of a couple, who they believe were killed in a murder-suicide. Dawn Armstrong, 37, and Thomas Lizotte, 42, of Millville, who were said to be lovers in an "on-and-off relationship," were found stabbed to death in Armstrong's Upton home. Police believe that Lizotte killed Armstrong before killing himself. [WBZTV]

When a fire tore through a South Boston home, killing 14-year-old Acia Johnson and her little 3-year-old sister, Sophia, the story was painful enough. Then the sad details of the life of their mother, Anna Reisopoulos, emerged, raising the question, "How could anyone let children live with this woman?" Now, their mother's lover, Nicole Chuminski, stands accused of causing the fire after a romantic spat.

      

Bostonist visited what's left of James Hook & Co. yesterday as firefighters hosed down the wreckage. The scene attracted a steady stream of visitors who stood silently, paying their respects to the Boston landmark. See our earlier post about the fire for a photo of James Hook & Co. in better days.

The fire closed the Moakley bridge, which connects South Boston to the Financial District, to vehicular traffic, causing a jumbled commute for beleaguered workers going to or from Southie.

-- Boston police arrested a woman for setting the fire that killed two young girls, Acia Johnson, 14, and her 3-year-old sister, Sophia, in South Boston last month. Nicole Chuminski, 25, will be arraigned Monday on two counts of murder and one count of arson. Chuminski was reportedly the girlfriend of the victims' mother, and the alleged arson may have been the outcome of a vicious spat. [Globe; Herald]

-- A stabbing this afternoon in Jamaica Plain has left one person hospitalized and another in custody, authorities say. The incident may have been the result of a domestic dispute. [Globe]
