Tonight, Mayor Thomas Menino was reelected to a historic fifth term, which, if served, will make him the longest serving mayor in Boston history. He beat Michael Flaherty by a wide margin of 57 percent of the vote to 42 percent, according to unofficial results. Incumbent City Councilors at large John Connolly and Stephen Murphy also retained their seats by hefty margins. Felix Arroyo and Ayanna Pressley will join city council with 16 and 15 percent of the vote, respectively. Pressley will be the first African American woman to serve on city council in Boston's history. In District 7, Chuck Turner blew away his competition despite a cloud of legal troubles, and Sal Lamattina, Michael Ross, and Mark Ciommo each held off challenges in their respective districts. Despite being the subject of a high-profile corruption probe, City Councilor Chuck Turner easily won Tuesday's preliminary election with 52% in a four-candidate race. Turner reportedly told the Herald "This is a mandate for me to fight back. They’re saying, ‘Keep on fighting.’" Turner was at federal court before Judge Timothy Hillman for a hearing regarding his access to the government documents the indictment is based on. Turner can gain access to the documents if he agrees not to leak them. Turner won't agree to the gag order, saying “They would have to put me in jail." Last week, Turner criticized the FBI for their handling, or not handling, the ongoing City Hall “e-mail-gate” scandal.

Dianne Wilkerson plead not guilty today to new charges of accepting bribes for playing a role in a development deal. Wilkerson resigned her state senate seat last fall after bribery chargers were made. Councilman Chuck Turner, also pleading not guilty to bribery charges, appeared in court with Wilkerson today.

Sal DiMasi's accountant, Richard Vitale, has been indicted on charges of campaign finance and lobbying violations, a result of cozying up to ticket brokers seeking deregulation. A Suffolk County jury indicted Vitale this afternoon. Martin Weinberg is representing Vitale and affirms no wrongdoing. Vitale received $60,000 from the Massachusetts Association of Ticket Brokers. There have also been allegations of payments to Vitale's company by Cognos, a software company that obtained a state contract in 2007.

Crypto-Stalinist, Serbian war crimes apologist, and all around unsavory character Ramsey Clark has been tapped to join City Councilor Chuck Turner's defense team, the Herald reports. Turner faces federal bribery charges, a far cry from the sorts of allegations that Clark is used to trying. His client list includes Saddam Hussein and alleged Serbian war criminal Radovan Karadžić. (Boston politics is rough, but not genocide-rough.) Clark, who once declared that "history will prove [Serbian president Slobodan] Milošević was right," served as U.S. Attorney General during the Johnson administration.

Despite pending federal charges, State Sentaor Dianne Wilkerson will continue her sticker campaign to retain her seat. The most infamous stuffed shirt in Boston is currently out on a $50,000 bond while awaiting a Federal corruption trial for allegedly accepting $23,500 in bribes.

Matt Viser at the Globe did a report today on how a few South Boston residents are hogging parking spots with chairs, trash barrels, and whatever is laying around. The city of Boston explicitly states that a person can save his or her spot for 48 hours after a storm. After that, it becomes hogging.

This is probably like preaching to the choir because of course all Bostonist readers promptly shovel their sidewalks. But, in light of City Councilor Chuck Turner's claim that he wasn't going to shovel his sidewalk because people in his neighborhood didn't walk on them (!!!), it's even more important to shovel because the disabled are having a hard time getting around.
