CHIKARA Pro Wrestling Presents Aniversarioma Friday, May 23, 7:00pm Framingham Civic League 214 Concord St., Framingham More information. CHIKARA Pro is an independent wrestling league based in Philadelphia. Like Boston's Kaiju Big Battel, which has hosted CHIKARA wrestlers in the past, the league offers the high-flying athleticism, complicated grappling, and outlandish storylines common to small-circuit wrestling in Mexico, Europe, and Japan. This Friday, CHIKARA comes to Framingham for its Massachusetts debut: an 8 bout card,... [continue]

Hip-hop -- Slick Rick might be the best storytelling rapper ever to grab a mic. Rick the Ruler's recent INS troubles make it possible that any show he performs might be his last in the United States. He raps in front of a live band these days, and his flow is just as bananas as it has ever been. There's a good chance that a third of the crowd will know every word to... [continue]

When Bostonist spoke with Louden Noxious, Kaiju Big Battel's live announcer, we developed an inkling of what was in store for us at the New and Improved Boston Massacre May 10, at the Roxy. But the spectacle itself happily exceeded our expectations. Kaiju Big Battel, which began eleven years ago in Boston, is a wrestling league with twist. Combatants enter the ring dressed as monsters and heroes. ("Kaiju," which means "monster," is the generic name... [continue]

Sox Get Greener on May 19, 2008

We wrote on the Red Sox recycling jerseys about a month ago, and now the team is taking green to a new level with some hot new solar panels. The panels went into effect today, and will help heat water used throughout the park. The panels are expected to replace 37% of the gas formerly used to heat water, eliminating 18 tons of CO2 emissions annually. This isn't the first effort the Sox have made... [continue]

After a scare that involved a helicopter trip to Mass General, doctors say Senator Ted Kennedy will be all right after having a seizure yesterday morning. Reports indicate that Kennedy is just fine and was watching some of the Red Sox game. If he is still in the hospital this afternoon, the doctors should swiftly wheel the television out of his room, lest he stumble across the Celtics-Cavs Game 7 and get really riled up.... [continue]

This past Saturday WFNX and The Boston Phoenix hosted the 2008 Best Music Poll concert featuring Death Cab for Cutie, The Presidents of the United States of America, Amanda Palmer of the Dresden Dolls, Bob Mould, and Eli "Paperboy" Reed. The show proved to be an energetic mix of musical styles and genres that brought a wide cross section of fans to the Bank of America Pavilion. While Death Cab for Cutie, touring in support... An old picture of our mayor, Tom Menino, is making the rounds now that Celtic Paul Pierce got in some trouble for throwing what might have been a gang sign at the Atlanta Hawks. (Next time, he should send the one-fingered salute. Everyone understands that gesture.) [Via Sports by Brooks] So, we gotta ask: Is the mayor flashing a gang sign? ( polls) For further clarification, read Chris Faraone's piece for the Dig that explains... [continue]

Guinness family heiress, Daphne Guinness, cleaned out her closet this week. For a good cause. After deciding she needs to make room for 20 more years of must-have trends, Guinness placed everything from Prada shoes to Alexander McQueen bags on an online auction site to raise money for the Womankind Worldwide fund. Our heart skipped a beat when we saw the Roland Mouret ‘Goldsmith’ dressand we wished we had the money (and the body)... [continue]

With their backs against the wall, responsible for a sudden regionwide crisis of confidence, the Celtics responded with one of their best, most balanced games of the season to punch Atlanta 110-85 and regain control of the first-round series. The C's put on a virtual clinic of how to spread the ball around, rely on your stars, let the bench guys contribute, and never really let the other guys into the game. Garnett set the... [continue]

Sick of almost getting hit by heedless drivers around Somerville? The Somerville Police Department hears ya. Boston drivers young and old have a reputation for recklessness, and cities are finally starting to recognize this. According to Wicked Local, the SPD is starting a "Stop for Red, Stop for Pedestrians, or Stop for Blue" campaign this Friday. Officers will patrol crosswalks, issuing warnings and possibly even citations or fines for drivers who fail to stop... [continue]

ROFLCon invaded Cambridge over the weekend, storming MIT's lecture halls and colonizing the bars of Central Square with novelty t-shirts. Bostonist knows that the Internet is always talking to itself, about itself, but it was surreal to be in the room while that was happening. Case in point: this guy sat in front of us during a web comics panel, watching the live webcast and browsing Flickr images of the very talk that he... [continue]

Sports Redux: Throwin' BBs on April 30, 2008

Don't listen to the so-called experts. Kids LOVE pitchers' duels. Go up to any schoolboy and mention some of the great mound rivalries of the past - Koufax/Marichal, Gibson/Seaver, Palmer/Hunter - and, well, you'll probably get a blank look. But maybe you'll find a kid who knows what you're talking about, and chances are that kid appreciated the gem last night at Fenway. For the Sox, Jon Lester was throwing strikes (yay) and inducing groundouts,... [continue]

In the battle of creepiness, the Church of Scientology scored a decisive win against Anonymous, the shady group of internet hackers and hooligans who have spent the past few months protesting the controversial religion. Massachusetts Lawyers Weekly reports that Gregg Housh, a member of Anonymous, will be arraigned in Boston Municipal Court on charges of harassment brought by the Church of Scientology. Anonymous has become well known for protesting in Guy Fawkes masks, inspired... [continue]

The curse-carryin' shredded-up David Ortiz jersey that had the Yanks quaking in their cleats has officially sold on eBay--for $175,100. Over a million people checked out the auction while it was going on, but not all of us could afford the awesomely exorbitant pricing. The auction benefits the Jimmy Fund, which unveiled the Ortiz jersey last Thursday at the Dana-Farber's Jimmy Fund Red Sox Gallery. The jersey will be on display at The Sports Museum... [continue]

Considering that two of the Red Sox' division rivals are named after birds, it's a wonder the avian kingdom hasn't struck at us more often. Small consolation to a middle-school girl from Connecticut, who was on a Fenway tour today and got attacked by a red-tailed hawk (similar to the one pictured). Everything turned out fine. The girl was treated and released, and the hawk and its nest are being sent away, presumably to Pawtucket... [continue]

Valentine’s Day is coming up next week and women everywhere are shopping like crazy to find the perfect outfit for that special date. So what about all of those single girls who have a whole lot of nothing planned for that evening? Many of them will do the generic, sit home in sweats, eat ice cream out of the container, and curse their friends who are part of a couple. Bostonist would like to recommend... [continue]
