--We are deeply in love with Beyond Boston Chic, a local blog celebrating Boston's on-the-street style. The posts feature Bostonians of every shape, size, color, and age. The one thing they've all got in common, as the site says is "that little sumthin', sumthin', that confidence or creativity that you're trying to get through." We commend fab Bostonian Martini for showing the blogosphere that not all of us dress drab. --If you're coveting the... [continue]
Bostonist is pleased to report the first solid evidence that the New Kids on the Block reunion is not some elaborate, Ashton-Kutcher-masterminded prank. Their first single, Summertime, is now online for your listening pleasure. As the station IDs repeatedly interrupting the song remind us, it's available via streaming audio at the website for On Air with Ryan Seacrest. We are also pleased to report that the song is totally inoffensive. It's not original in any... [continue]
First, a word of warning: if you're going to see Eddie Izzard tonight or tomorrow, wear as little clothing as possible--like, a bathing suit or a nightie, possibly. Bostonist doesn't usually advocate public semi-nudity, but The Orpheum Theater, which is not exactly a comfortable venue at the best of times, felt like New Orleans in August before the show even started last night. After two hours of laughter and cheers from the packed house,... [continue]
Did you show up to register at ROFLcon and realize that your chosen outfits just aren’t geeky enough? Don’t worry: Bostonist has got you covered. If you’re not looking to make friends, J!NX offers There Is No Cheat Code To Make You Cooler. (Bostonist withholds comment on scoring one’s coolness on video game prowess.) Or be a little more accessibly insulting and let con-goers know that their ringtone sucks. If you’re feeling less combative,... [continue]
Oh, Tom Brady. You may love New York, but it seems the feeling is not mutual. First there was that thing against the Giants in Arizona that we still don’t want to talk about, and now Law & Order: SVU branded “a pro football player who wears No. 12, has a cleft chin and a supermodel galpal, [and] plays in a red-and-blue stadium” a suspect in the murder of his secret gay lover in... Until this week, Bostonist was unaware that eco-friendly Method cleaning products are the object of a cult-like devotion. Then we asked some friends whether it would be worth it to check out the deals at Method’s temporary store, located where Jasmine Sola Shoes used to be on Newbury Street. We haven’t heard anyone speak so rhapsodically about tub cleaner in, well, ever. The selection is small, but the deal is good: buy any five... [continue]
Bostonist loves geekwear, from simple t-shirts to elaborate homemade costumes. We admire all nerds loud & proud enough to wear clothing so obscure that the wearer may be the only person in a 100 mile radius who gets the joke. And in the coming weeks we'll be profiling the geekiest clothing we can find online and in the wild. But today we're talking about what to do on those occasions when you need to... [continue]
Bostonist generally likes Lucky Magazine. They feature clothing and beauty products at a variety of price points and helpfully give you little stickers saying Yes! and Maybe? to remind you which products you want to conspicuously consume. But the "Shopping Report" section of their May 2008 issue made us wonder whether Lucky's laser-like focus on fashion has blinded them to basic geography. Hip new housewares boutique Grand is listed under "Boston," which we could... [continue]
Federal Reserve Chair Ben Bernanke will take time out of his busy schedule of trying to keep the economy from collapsing to speak at Harvard College's Class Day in June. The Harvard Crimson quoted Class Marshall Alexander J. Tennant as saying, "We believe Mr. Bernanke will provide the perfect balance of thought to our graduation ceremonies." Bostonist wonders: does the rest of Class Day not involve thought? Class Day takes place the day before... [continue]
Cheap & chic retailer H&M unveils its latest collaboration with a master of high-fashion on April 10. This summer's collection was designed by Finnish print masters Marimekko. New York Magazine has a preview of the collection, and unlike the Necco-wafer-ish pastels that currently dominate spring fashion, the prints' colors are bright and bold enough to substitute for the sun during Boston's dreary April. Bostonist especially likes the retro bathing suits and flowy dresses. Prices... [continue]
Bostonist is feeling pretty wary of the media today, so we were skeptical when the Globe announced that the New Kids on the Block will be announcing their reunion tour this Friday, for real this time, no joking. We were especially doubtful considering an NKOTB reunion was Boston.com's April Fools joke a few years ago. But no: we googled it, and it's true. We guess they talked Danny into it and coaxed Jonathan out... [continue]
While Nordstrom brought Bryant Park to Burlington, the Betsey Johnson fashion show at The Estate was a decidedly more casual affair, featuring 20 minutes of fashion after 2 hours of dance music and $6 beers. It was worth the wait for the vibrant and playful prom and party dresses displayed and the trendspotting in the crowd. In both cases, the 1980's were a clear influence. The Betsey Johnson dresses had a contemporary edge, but... [continue]
Popular seafood restaurant The Barking Crab got an unexpected visit from the Boston Inspectional Services Department yesterday. They cited The Crab for moldy draft beer lines among other violations. City spokesperson Lisa M. Timberlake told the Globe that the inspectors' visit was prompted by a letter of complaint about smoke from the the restaurant's wood stove. The Crab's ownership had a different idea as to the cause. "At some point, there will be a... [continue]
Mixing an encyclopedic knowledge of the works of Aaron Spelling and The Spice Girls with a burning hatred of leggings and high-waisted pants, Heather Cocks and Jessica Morgan, creators of the popular website Go Fug Yourself, have been turning horribly-dressed celebrities into comedy gold since 2004. They were named one of the world's 50 most powerful blogs by the UK Guardian and recently expanded into publishing with The Fug Awards. Bostonist caught up with Heather... [continue]
One of the cruelest jokes of adulthood is that it's so much more difficult than you think it's going to be. Young people throughout the ages have said, "Yeah, yeah. Work, pay bills, buy groceries. I got it. How hard can it be?" And then they've wondered why the grown-ups around them were giggling. Avenue Q, at the Colonial Playhouse through March 23, mines the humor potential of being young, underfunded, and uninspired for... [continue]
South Boston's 108th annual St. Patrick’s Day Parade happens this Sunday at 1pm. Event details and a map of the parade route are here, and Bostonist has put together this list of Do's and Don't's to help you enjoy the parade, get your drink on, and not make an ass of yourself. DO: Arrive early. If you drive, plan to have breakfast in Southie, because all parking spaces will be gone by 10am. The... [continue]
Bostonist recently visited Artists For Humanity's A Street headquarters to check out the cool, Boston-centric, silk-screened t-shirts and hoodies on sale at their new store. We were psyched to find that t-shirts are just the tip of the fashion and design iceburg at the non-profit, which "provid[es] underserved youth with the keys to self-sufficiency through paid employment in the arts." At their sprawling main building, local teenagers engage in screen printing, photography, painting, graphic... [continue]
Recently Bostonist wondered: how do hometown-loving fashionistas show their Boston pride without resorting to tacky Cheers t-shirts or the ubiquitous Red Sox hat? So we made a visit to our favorite source of unique, handmade merchandise, Etsy, and searched "Boston." To say we were delighted with the results does not do justice to the amount of squealing that occurred. Amy J. Designs offers a necklace (pictured) and cuff links made with now-sadly-defunct T tokens.... [continue]
The 21st century has seen dramatic improvements in faking it. These days we've got bigger and better fake nails, fake hair, fake boobs, and now? Fake eyelashes. Lux Lash, at 232 Newbury Street, offers semi-permanent lash extensions that last from a weekend to two months. The finished result is like a 24-7 application of lengthening and thickening mascara. Bostonist isn't entirely sold on the transformational powers of synthetic lashes, even if they are individually applied... [continue]
