Make sure to see hundreds of pinwheels on display at Larz Anderson Park. The exhibit, Art on the Wind, which lasts through the end of August, is a creation of local artist Katrina Majkut. The park is at 23 Newton St, Brookline. Find the pinwheels on the Goddard Street side. Enjoy the warm weather. Frolic with dinosaurs. Get your art on. Bostonist lists happenings daily. Sometimes we even share dinosaur-related news.... [continue]
Broken River Prophet CD Release Party for With Infinite Arms to Cradle the Flames Middle East Upstairs Saturday, August 16, 9pm with Plus/Minus, Animal Hospital, Ba-Na-Nas $9 advance / $10 day of Our "Bostonian of the Week" feature is verging on "musicians of the week," but that's okay with us. Broken River Prophet is a local band with a long history—it first made dark, unsettling yet beautiful noise in 1994, and had a shifting lineup... [continue]
The only thing Bostonist likes more than a film festival is an unscheduled one. Two weeks after the Harvard Film Archive showed The Professionals, the Brattle is screening The Swimmer today as part of its "Disturbed Suburbs" series, giving Cambridge residents and Boston movie watchers something of an impromptu Burt Lancaster retrospective. It's hard to picture Lancaster as anything other than a symbol of youth. His love scene on the beach in 1953's From Here... [continue]
One of the series of Fang Friends by Fangela Fangula. Bostonist does not endorse playing baseball on pterodactyls and strongly urges children not to follow Fang Friend Manny's example.... [continue]
Yesterday, we brought you information on several wineries. Tonight, Bostonist will be at the Second Glass Ivy League Wine College, focusing on South African wines. The event is sold out, but we'll review it for you so you know what to expect next time around. In the meantime, you can start planning an August vineyard excursion to the Coastal Wine Trail with our helpful hints. Westport Rivers Winery, which recently received some press from the... We’d just like to remind you of how lucky you are to be living in New England. Why, you ask? If it’s not the weather, the traffic, or the football team, whatever could it be? Well, the beer, naturally. For whatever reason—possibly the weather and the traffic—New England has a high concentration of amazing breweries and brew pubs. You can hardly finish a drunken stagger without falling over one. Pardon the blasphemy, but forget Sam... [continue]
This past Thursday the 10th Annual Lantern Festival was held at the Forest Hills Cemetery in Jamaica Plain. This Buddhist-ritual inspired event has long been a big draw for Boston-area photographers and this year was no different. As the paper lanterns inscribed with personal messages floated across Lake Hibiscus and Japanese drummers performed many cameras were snapping the serene scene. Check out the photos for a feel of this special night.... [continue]
Post contributed by beer fan Llalan Fowler. It’s a hot summer night. You’re in Harvard Square, squeezing your way down a sidewalk crowded with fanny-pack-sporting tourists, panhandlers, and plaid-shorted knots of undergrad boys. Where can you escape to? You don’t want to sit in a loud, excruciatingly air conditioned bar, nor do you want to pretend you’re hungry and order an appetizer just to secure an outdoor table. Life is tough. Time to sit on... This is a guest post from beer fan Llalan Fowler. Many contend that the Hefeweizen is the one true “summer drink.” Others, should they be more liquor-ly inclined, may argue for the mojito or even the mint julep. These are all fine drinks for lounging on the porch on a lazy, sticky Sunday afternoon. They are all refreshing and—more importantly—sweet. But they are best for the humid summers of Germany, Cuba, and Kentucky, respectively.... [continue]
It suddenly feels like 2007 again. We’d be stupid not to mention the pink elephant in the room, the pink elephant being Barry Bonds. According to the unofficial Red Sox spokesperson, Peter Gammons, there have been discussions about bringing Barry to Boston. We know, we know: Pitching wins games. We proved that in ’04 and ’07. But even with great pitching, you need to score runs. So why not sign a guy who can bring... [continue]
"I lived in Boston for four years and I was never here. Call it what you will. But I'm glad tonight is the first night." On Friday night, Josh Ritter began his set in Boston's most esteemed concert hall (lined with statuary of "huge, intimidating, partially-clad figures") by singing about his native Midwest: "Idaho," Illinois in "Best for the Best," and the whole region as "story we made up to erase" in "Other Side." Ritter... [continue]
Each week Bostonist scours the internet for the most viral of Boston-based videos for your LOL-ing pleasure. This week's entry takes us over the river to Central Square where "Art Genius Master Carr" takes innocent passersby on a free art tour of the alleyway outside Central Kitchen. While the real story behind this awesome mural is a bit different than Master Carr presents it, listening to him describe his "pink flower period" and how he... [continue]
When we last saw Devotchka, they occupied a stage the size of a coffee table, and Bostonist was relieved that TT's didn't collapse under the weight of their sousaphone. Returning to Boston on Sunday night, they brought reinforcements, annexing the Paradise Rock Club with horn players and an actual sit-down, read-sheet-music string section. When frontman Nick Urata wasn't crooning, falsettoing, and shaking his sub-Morrissey quiff, he swapped guitars and bouzouki and, during "Curse Your... [continue]
A hunter can track Brad Neely by his videos and animations, left like a trail of hilarious droppings across the forest of the internet. His breakout success Wizard People, Dear Readers provided an alternative soundtrack to the first Harry Potter movie, a narration in which Harry Potter is a boozehound, Hermione is known as "Wretched Harmony," and Snape is a woman. More recently, he has published a series of crude animations for the website SuperDeluxe,... [continue]
Boston isn't the best place in the country to celebrate Earth Day, the pedagogical holiday started in 1970 by Senator Gaylord Nelson to teach people about environmental issues. Our own spring holiday involves more redcoats and Red Sox than anything that's green. But, if Earth Day is your bag, there are a few things around town for you to do today. Boston Children's Museum, which promotes itself as Boston's "first green museum," hosts a special... [continue]
Puzzled by a correction posted on our earlier report concerning a certain resident of New York City, his child, and his freakishly tiny lover, Bostonist tracked down the source. We have to admit: the Brady Baby probably knows what happened better than we do. Dreamboat Baby is a surprisingly elegant blog purportedly written by Tom Brady and Bridget Moynahan's infant son. It offers an insider's perspective into Brady's life and motivations (he lost the Super... [continue]
The Writer's Brush Pierre Menard Gallery 10 Arrow St., Cambridge Through Sunday, January 27 617-868-2033 Everyone at one time or another wants to become something else. This week at the Pierre Menard Gallery in Cambridge is the last chance to witness rare visual works created by some of the greatest... [continue]
