The collegiate population may deem Thursdays "Thirsty Thursdays", but as a majority of them have departed our fine city for internships in New York, jobs back home, or foreign lands - we here at Bostonist HQ have come to view Thursday as dance night. As such, here is a brief rundown of just a few of your Thursday night options. Bostonist favorites, Next Generation Productions, are holding it down at their usual Thursday night...... [continue]

Just after the MFA is set to open its "Americans in Paris: 1860 - 1900" exhibition on June 25; beginning Thursday, July 6 and running through Sunday, July 23 - the MFA hosts the 11th Annual French Film Festival. This year the Festival boasts 25 area premieres and work spanning four decades. There is much more to French cinema than Amelie, and the programming for the three weeks in July is sure to deliver... While perusing this week's issue of the Boston Phoenix we came across an ad for Old School Prom on the back page. It featured a young woman in yellow strapless prom dress, updo, and attitude-full look holding a massive mirror with the words "Now who's the fairest of them all?" written on it (as if to appeal to all the 'ugly duckings' out there who want to set the record straight). The details were...... [continue]

After checking out Second Gallery's newest installations, you will be only a few blocks away from the new Saturday night attraction - "Heart Changing Love", the inaugural club night by Gold Chain productions (comprised of Second Gallery curator Rebecca Gordon and Kevin Driscoll aka DJ Lone Wolf). "Heart Changing Love" is being held at the Shannon Tavern on East Third Street in Southie. The night promises a mix of hip-hop, R&B, reggae, reggaeton, and... [continue]

Bostonist favorite Second Gallery, curated and managed by local Bostonian Rebecca Gordon, opens its third installation Saturday evening with a reception from 7:00 - 9:00. The Gallery presents two installations: And if I only could, I'd make a deal with god, and I'd get him to swap our places, by Aaron Brewer, and False Profit by Michael Mahalchick. For more on the artists and the installation visit the Second Gallery website. And if I... [continue]

"The Rub", Brooklyn's number one dance party, is coming to Redline this Thursday, April, 13 to celebrate the 2-year anniversary of Reunion Thursdays - a Next Generation Productions night. Reunion Thursdays are the hottest nights in the Boston area - and this Thursday is raising it to new heights. "The Rub" are no joke, one look at their press page or listen to one of their tracks on their myspace profile tells you that... [continue]

Resident Bostonian Rebecca Gordon's Second Gallery is something new and exciting to the Boston art scene. Housed in Southie's artist community/workspace epicenter The Distillery, Second Gallery is sure to be the contemporary arts space in the city that it strives to be - going beyond the aims of many galleries driven primarily by profit margins and consumer demand - Second Gallery sets itself up as a space that "engages new approaches to subject matter... Given Bostonist's recent interest in graffiti and street art, as well as a few connections we have to a certain street art site, there was no way to avoid letting our readers know about SPOTHUNTERS, the newest installation to open at the New Art Center in Newton. Curated by Caleb Neelon and featuring the likes of Shepard Fairey, Greg Lamarche, Monster Project, and the curator himself - this installation is truly something to check... [continue]

Having spent some time in London, certain Bostonist staff members have formed an unnaturally strong affection for tea, and especially tea with milk (although there are certain teas that you shouldn't add milk to, but we digress.) Back in the day we were able to hop on down to our favorite local tea provider and pick up loose tea that was beautiful, eco-friendly, and development sound (part of the proceeds from each sale went... Here at Bostonist headquarters, the staff may not agree on whether Valentine's Day is legit or whether it is just the creation of a card company to create a profit, (mostly due to the relationship status of the individual), but we do love music and have compiled some suggestions for you and yours on this special day. Find below a few suggestions from our staff for your evening of love, like, or lust. Josh... [continue]

Bostonist was exposed to Boy in Static (Alex Chen) a mere four weeks ago thanks to the wonder of our favorite online photo gallery (and oh so much more) Flickr. Ever since that moment we have been listening to his album on late night drives home to the suburbs, in the lingering hours of a night of studying (yes, some of us are STILL in school), and just generally whenever we get a free... Bostonist is a BIG fan of installation/public artwork (to be fairly general) - we LOVED Aaron Noble's site-specific mural at the Davis Museum @ Wellesley College, we LOVE Julian Opie's pieces on Northern Avenue Bridge, and we are eagerly anticipating the newest installation going up at EMF of former Cantebridgian Tighe Clark. For those of you unfamiliar with EMF - it is in fact an electrical supply company, still owned by the same family... [continue]

The MFA has been and will continue to show recent documentary "Who Gets to Call It Art?" which chronicles the impact of Met curator (the FIRST curator for the Met of contemporary art) Henry Geldzahler on the 1960's art scene. Commentary from greats such as Pollock, de Kooning, Hockney, and Stella litter the film - and an overview of the art of the 1960s in general is also covered. With reviews ranging from glorious... Opening February 26 in the Gund Gallery at the MFA, David Hockney Portraits promises to make up for such recent disappointments as "The Things I Love: The Many Collections of William Koch" and "Style, Speed, and Beauty: Cars from the Ralph Lauren Collection." As much as Bostonist can appreciate the new audience that such exhibitions pulled into the MFA, it is more than a welcome breathe of fresh air to have British artist Hockney's... [continue]

The Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum is at it again, creating an installation that boggles the mind, A Pagan Feast. Michele Iodice, a set designer and much more from Italy, has created a Pagan feast in the Dutch Room replete with dinner settings, food, tablecloth, and centerpieces. The artist took into account the lavish holiday parties that Mrs. Gardner was known for, using her passion for making each occasion a real experience, he assembled a... [continue]

The first thing Bostonist thought yesterday when we awoke to the sight of snow - it's time to put on the snow tires on our rear wheel vehicle. Ugh. If Sunday's snow wasn't enough for you, don't worry the greater Boston area is in for another round of snow tomorrow. WHDH TV Boston reports that beginning tonight a winter storm warning is in effect for the Cape, Islands & parts of SE Mass. The... [continue]

We were shocked and mystified by an article in the Boston Globe this weekend entitled, "Receding groundwater threatens Boston's historic legacy." Could it really be, Bostonist's dream residential area may crumble before we even get a chance to earn enough money to live there? According to the article, it turns out that "Groundwater levels have been dropping for years in some Boston neighborhoods, exposing the wooden supports that have propped up the city for...... While perusing an Improper Bostonian today, we noticed an ad for a new play hitting town starting tonight, P.S. Page Me Later. Noticing that it was somehow tied to FOUND Magazine, we did a little investigating of our own. Here is a synopsis of what the play is all about from FOUND, "Alarm Clock Theatre Company is performing FOUND stuff! They're calling it P.S. Page Me Later. Inspired by the incredible range of hilarious, angry,... [continue]

Bostonist could not believe our eyes when the weekly JFK Jr. Forum calendar "pinged" into our mailbox - next Monday, December, 5 at 6:00 PM none other than Carl Bernstein and Bob Woodward will be part of a panel discussion entitled, "ANONYMOUS SOURCES: Lessons Learned." Back when Bostonist was just a wee little News Editor on our high school newspaper, the book and movie All the President's Men made us believe in the power...... [continue]

The Boston Globe reports today that "the city of Boston has approved a 50 cents per ride gasoline surcharge on cab fares, which are already among the highest in the nation." Breath a brief sigh of relief because this fare hike is only temporary. The goal of the 50 cent surcharge is to relieve the Boston taxi cab driver's wallet of the burden of increased gas prices faced in the post-Katrina context. Don't get... [continue]
