We'd sure like to know what happened in the Bruins' locker room between the second and third periods last night. After two, the Leafs had tied the game 1-1, had peppered Tim Thomas with 18 shots, and had everybody at the Garden pontificating whether the game would be a microcosm of the entire season. Well, maybe not everybody. But whatever was said, it lit a fire under the B's; Phil Kessel, Glen Murray and Peter... [continue]

-- A Malden teen was shot in Somerville last night, the victim of an apparent drive-by shooting. The 15 year old was shot in the lung and is expected to survive. Police are seeking four suspects in the crime, last seen driving a green Dodge Stratus. [WBZTV; Somerville Journal] -- A domestic incident in Roxbury turned ugly last night, as police officers responded to a call from a man under threat from his ex-girlfriend. After... [continue]

Popular seafood restaurant The Barking Crab got an unexpected visit from the Boston Inspectional Services Department yesterday. They cited The Crab for moldy draft beer lines among other violations. City spokesperson Lisa M. Timberlake told the Globe that the inspectors' visit was prompted by a letter of complaint about smoke from the the restaurant's wood stove. The Crab's ownership had a different idea as to the cause. "At some point, there will be a... [continue]

It was the adorable title of this colorful photo that caught our eye - "Spring flowers are popping up all over!" Flickr is definitely a bit inundated with budding flower shots as of late, so this fun graphic take was a breath of fresh air. Thanks to KarenMarleneLarsen for her great work.... [continue]

Paul Pierce might not think about the games he's recently played, but Celtics fans had past performances in their minds on Wednesday night - particularly the manner in which he'd faltered last month during play against those pesky Suns of Phoenix. It was with a big cheer (and sigh of relief) that we responded to a 27-point effort from P Squared during last night's 117-97 Celtics win at the Call It What You Want... [continue]

Boston's favorite most eligible bachelor/fallen-from-grace attorney has proven once again that charges against him won't stick. Gary Zerola was found not guilty for the second time in two months this afternoon in Suffolk Superior Court. The Herald is reporting that he was acquitted of sexual assault on a young woman. The prosecution's case was hurt by questions of the accuser's credibility and the fact that the Boston Police Department didn't get a search warrant.... [continue]

Oh how we've missed our good friend sandcastlematt! Happily he's back with a few more photos, and we especially loved this diptych, even though it makes us long terribly for the warm weather.... [continue]

You can make your own liquid sunshine! All you need is lemons, sugar, and vodka. You've enjoyed it after dinner, you've seen Danny DeVito make an ass of himself over it, and now you've got the recipe for making limoncello! Sure, you can buy it at any decent liquor store, but it's so easy to make, a homemade batch is totally worth the effort! First, wash and dry some lemons. The more you use, the... [continue]

Ex-Herald crime writer Michele McPhee hasn't completely abandoned print journalism for the joys of radio--which include sharing the booth with media maven Mayor Menino. She has a lengthy (4000+ words) and well-sourced piece in the newest issue of Boston Magazine that brings perspective and insight to the much-chronicled troubles of the Boston Police Department. The force's legitimacy has been crippled by a string of recent scandals, some of which McPhee recounts. But she's also... [continue]

We were confused when we read Dan Shaughnessy's wrap-up of Tuesday's season opener in Japan yesterday afternoon. While we agreed that the return of Red Sox baseball was "fun-filled, action-packed," it felt as Shaughnessy saw something in Japan that we missed back here in the States: title defense from the Sox and "those cardboard cutouts wearing an Oakland Athletics uniform." We saw occasionally shaky pitching and an Oakland team that could very easily have set... [continue]

In the ongoing game we imagine going on between Starbucks and Dunkin' Donuts, Dunkin' Donuts just scored a point. At least their local employees aren't suing them. A Starbucks employee in Chestnut Hill is suing because he feels the company didn't give him his due from the tip jar. Specifically, the employee claims that the managers, who were already getting paid more, were getting a cut from the tips: "In a class-action suit filed yesterday... [continue]

-- Police have arrested a 17 year-old suspect in the February 16 shooting death of Brockton cab driver Edward Conley. The incident happened on Galen Street, a Brockton cul-de-sac. Police say that Adilson Neves bragged about the shooting to friends and gave a taped confession while in custody. Neves admitted that he had left a shoe at the crime scene, according to authorities. He was arraigned today in Brockton District Court and faces charges including... [continue]

It was hard for us to choose the one best photo from gnarayan's fabulous shots of the Free Tibet rally in Harvard Square. Help us out and head over to his Flickr set and decide for yourself. Powerful stuff.... [continue]

Charismatic media personality Tom Menino is now doing stints on Michele McPhee's radio show on WTKK-FM (96.9.) Perhaps the mayor is looking for ways to supplement his meager income? The Herald originally reported that Menino would be going on the air once a week, but Boston Daily talked to McPhee and clarified that he'll actually be on once a month. McPhee told them, “We go way back, so this show will be an extension... [continue]

1-0. That's all that matters. Sure, Daisuke Matsuzaka pitched like he just got off the plane after a 19-hour trip. Papelbon was shaky. J.D. Drew got hurt. But look at the bright sides. Hideki Okajima upstaged his countryman and got the win. Manny's on pace for 648 RBIs. And J.D. was replaced by Brandon Moss, who hit the game-tying home run. In case you had cable or satellite problems, you weren't alone. And ESPN's GameCast... [continue]

When most people think of Turkish food, kebabs and pita bread come to mind. And while Brookline Family Restaurant, located in Brookline Village, has both, they also have some more unusual items on the menu. Under the "Turkish Pizza" section of the menu, you can find many dishes for $12 to $16 - and one at $3.50. This lone cheap eat is lahmacun, an ultra thin and crispy circle of dough topped mostly with... [continue]

Bostonist arrived at the Prudential on Saturday ready to be let down. The gatekeepers at Anime Boston 2008 had not issued us a press pass, and our +20 Cloak of Belonging is, shall we say, somewhat out of date. But, to our great pleasure, the grim, unreachable confines of Hynes Convention Center could not contain Anime Boston's faithful, who erupted into the Shops at Prudential Center. Hey, they've got to eat sometime, right? We caught... [continue]

More and More King Sal on March 24, 2008

Last week, all of the talk was about Speaker of the House Sal DiMasi's demolition of Governor Deval Patrick's casino plan. He was credited with spearheading the movement against what had been the highest profile piece of the governor's plan to boost the Bay State economy. In the wake of his defeat, Patrick sent an e-mail Saturday to supporters from his election campaign that didn't mention DiMasi by name but suggested that the process... [continue]
