Before the book clubs, car giveaways, and Bob Greene, Bostonist didn't really mind Oprah and her show. Then Ms. Winfrey began her path to spiritual bliss and started her magazine, and now she is a guru of anything having to do with females. So, she’s now pairing up with her own set of “gurus” and is hosting the O You! event this Saturday at the Boston Convention Center. For a measely(!) $95 resgistration fee, you... [continue]
The Finnish patterns of Marimekko first caught our eye while shopping in Crate and Barrel years back and we’ve been hooked ever since on its trippy patterns and bold colors. Being the naïve, self-righteous ones we are, we assumed C&B got some great new designers, until Bostonist’s more artsy friends told us that Marimekko patterns grew to international success in the mid 1960s, putting Finland on the fashion map. It is still around today, being... [continue]
According to the MBTA website and Boston.com, the Green Line service has been suspended between Government Center and Kenmore right now. There was some sort of fire-related incident at the Boylston Station and the MBTA is now busing people along the Green Line. The Herald is just reporting there is smoke coming from a tunnel just west of the Boylston stop. On the bright side, at least the Sox aren't playing tonight at Fenway. All...... [continue]
Bostonist hadn't made any solid Saturday plans for this weekend until we read a post about "Museum Day" being held nationwide this Saturday, September 30. In honor of the Smithsonian, who has free admission to their great museums year round, other museums are joining in this free education ideology and will not be charging admission for this one specific day. In order to enter one of the participating museums for free, you must download... [continue]
The MBTA has teamed up with Dunkin Donuts today to launch part of their Courtesy Counts campaign, which will reward nice transit users with a $2 Dunkin Donuts gift certificate on the T, buses, and commuter rails. If you give up your seat to an expectant mother or help a clueless tourist figure out the Red Line, you might be a lucky winner. Unfortunately, only 25 MBTA employees are closely watching for niceness, with a...... [continue]
While Bostonist loves the idea of brunch, we often get a little miffed when we see all the happy couples in love eyeing each other over their french toasts. Yet, when we heard about a breakfast place that has lots of happy families and a killer, cheap meal, we decided to go check it out. We ventured out to Union Square in Somerville to try the generically named Neighborhood Restaurant. Since it was a sunny,... [continue]
When the cast and crew of the latest Scorsese flick, "The Departed" descended on Boston last year, Bostonist was excited to see some real movie stars film in the real streets of Boston (and not Toronto, Vancouver, or any other more affordable Canadian city). Unfortunately, they were only here about a month before heading down to New York City to use it as the backdrop for what is supposed to be an entire story... [continue]
Since it was introduced in 1935, Parker Brothers' Monopoly has delighted all those broke folks out there hoping that one day they could own Park Place (with hotels even). For those of us in 2006, we still dream of someday being able to afford any sort of real estate in the Boston area, so we turn to board games to make our fantasies a reality. In honor of Monopoly's 70th birthday, Parker Brothers is launching...... [continue]
Last January, Bostonist came across a cute little spot in Bay Village called Rachel's Kitchen; we loved their "grilled cheese deluxe" and loved even more that the place actually had real owners, Rachel and Alon, who work side-by-side each day at the Kitchen. While the place has great food, it is tiny and can make it hard to secure a seat. They've decided to expand their restaurant business and are currently in the works... [continue]
We’re sure all of you were sad to see Boston’s Cow Parade come to an end last week as all the bovines were removed from our city sidewalks. Luckily, those intellectual folks over in Cambridge have begun a community-based art project today that “explores the intersections of art and literacy.” Cambridge Code/x invites any one to decipher coded messages that will appear on the 2 miles of sidewalk between Harvard Square and Porter Square on...... Boston.com has decided to lift our Bostonian spirits with some free ice cream next week. Sure, the Sox have slipped into no man's land in the standings but why not drown your sorrows in some Curse Reversed ice cream? Starting off with vanilla on Tuesday, September 12th, participating Brighams will be handing out a free scoop of the day when you present them with a nifty coupon from boston.com's website. The free ice cream will... [continue]
In case you didn’t hear the big news last week: Boston has once again risen to the top of a Forbes list and we’re not too sure this one is a good thing. It seems that Boston was rated fourth nationwide in America’s Drunkest Cities 2006 poll. While Bostonist often rolls out of bed with a headache, questioning why we decided to have that last Grey Goose at 1:30a.m., we assumed we were just...... [continue]
We here at Bostonist have chosen not to do a play-by-play of this past weekend’s Sox series against the Yankees. We’ve decided to take the high road and analyze who the hell we can blame for the awfulness that ensued against New York. While some look to Varitek’s absence as a major reason for losing, we’ve heard others point fingers at a slew of people. Could it be the grounds crew and their lack of...... [continue]
A United Airlines plane travelling from London to Washington D.C. was forced to land at Logan Airport this morning after a 60-year-old female passenger became agitated, claiming fear of claustrophobia on board. This U.S. citizen had to be restrained by passengers and was arrested by State Police once the plane landed at Terminal E. We much prefer when planes are diverted to less populated places, like Bangor. It's a little disconcerting that this DC-bound...... [continue]
While many argue about the discrimination in this city, this ideology is also affecting the vermin in the city sewers as well. As many shocked restaurant patrons came to find out last Thursday, rats do not add to the ambience when inhaling a filet mignon on Newbury Street. Louis J. Antonellis, a local labor union guy for Electrical Workers Local 103, decided he had had enough with the Capital Grille after fighting with them for... [continue]
Forbes came out with yet another poll this year, this time focusing on the single kids out there looking for love. Boston has remained steady for the second year in a row as the second best city in the U.S. for single people. With a significant number of students flowing in and out of the city each September, Boston always has a great number of young people to begin with; add some solid nightlife...... [continue]
"Our schools look like prisons, and our prisons look like malls" Horses in the Sky -- A Silver Mt. Zion Bostonist had the opportunity to catch A Silver Mt. Zion and the Black Ox Orkestar at the Middle East last Wednesday night. It was an amazing show and a great night. If you don't know, A Silver Mt. Zion was formed by Godspeed You! Black Emperor's Efrim Menuck, Sophie Trudeau and Thierry Amar. The seven... [continue]
We first heard about The South End Buttery and their organic cupcakes when they first opened up in the South End this past spring. Bostonist was heavy into cupcakes at the time (now we're intrigued by homemade lemonades) and had heard great things about their 'cakes. Well, we never got over to The Buttery until recently for a lovely Friday afternoon lunch and we were very pleased with the results so much that we were... [continue]
Bostonist has known since college (and repeatedly confirmed at our first office job) that no Internet-researched and keyboard-typed task can be completed without a healthy dose of procrastination. There are lots of very important things to do before you start that pending assignment. You need to check your e-mail (all active accounts), Facebook, myspace, weather forecast, local news, and of course Bostonist.com. One Internet destination that has been dear to our hearts throughout our desk-bound... [continue]
If you’ve grown tired (like Bostonist) of the same old scene at the drinking establishments around town, there is a new twist to the night out and it will not only get you a little buzzed, but it will expand you culturally as well. ArtBar Boston is a local business that brings together artists and their work in the lovely setting of a bar; so while you mingle, drink, and chat, you can also shop...... [continue]
