Victoria Welch's Profile

Thousands of people woke Sunday morning as calm, collected adults. And yet a funny thing happened on the way to the TD Banknorth Garden that night. By 9 p.m., many of those unsuspecting people (mostly women in their late twenties and early thirties) had undergone a mass regression the like of which Bostonist has never before experienced. Mature members of society were reduced to shrieking, swooning schoolgirls. The New Kids on the Block's second Garden... [continue]

We've been ready to write off Dane Cook for a long time (we're still bitter about those "There's Only One October" commercials last year). Arlington's finest most famous export has been raking in the cash and selling out (large venues, that is) with essentially the same comedy material and frat guy schtick for years, while his movies have been much less commercially or critically successful. Seriously, did anyone actually see Good Luck Chuck? But who... [continue]

EdgeFest: Amanda Palmer Collaboration with the Boston Pops Symphony Hall 8 p.m. tonight Ticket information If you are passing by Symphony Hall tonight - or attending Palmer's EdgeFest collaboration with the Boston Pops - you will be able to see how Palmer's 2008 style fuses with the original plans hatched by Symphony Hall architects McKim, Mead, and White back in 1900. The Boston-based musician, who will close her two-night Pops partnership this evening, has long... [continue]

Over the last few years, Boston sports fans have grown accustomed to hearing about the bets waged between mayors and governors whenever their teams are duking it out for a title. The stakes? Typically, it comes down to food - lots of food reflecting some of the finest culinary tastes each team's hometown has to offer. In other words, food that the fans would love to be able to eat. The victorious fans are left... [continue]

It is easy to understand why musicians on the road feel the need to deliver not just a concert, but an event. Ticket prices have climbed and the ability to transport ornate stage setups and special effects - combined with healthy performer gravitas, a typical summer concert in 2008 consists of equal parts sonic experience and eyecandy. The Raconteurs' stop at the Bank of America Pavilion on Tuesday night, however, was two times the throwback... [continue]

Are you looking for a way to tell that special Sex and the City-crazed woman in your life that you care? Treat her to a foot massage sometime this week. She's going to need it. If Bostonist had a dollar for each time we heard "my feet are killing me" on Friday night, we'd be able to afford a new pair of Jimmy Choo Edalene Textured patent platforms. We, like seemingly half of the greater... [continue]

ImprovBoston's Bachelor and Bachelorette Auction Sunday, 8 pm (7 pm doors) VENU, 100 Warrenton Street Tickets $7 advance, $10 door, $25 VIP reception Website ImprovBoston moved from its former Inman Square haunt into its new and bright digs on Central Square's Propsect Street back in February, but the performance group has been continuing its efforts to raise $185,000 in a capital campaign. On Sunday evening, 19 IB performers will put themselves up on the... [continue]

Beatles fans' minds were blown Wednesday when word spread that a Lawrence-based video company will face down Yoko Ono in a Boston court case next week, over whether the company can release footage of John Lennon making music and smoking marijuana. World Wide Video, described as "a New England consortium of Beatles collectors," wishes to release footage that is "intimate and no-holds-barred" in nature. The company acquired the footage in a 2000 sale from Brian... [continue]

The Boston Pops announced today that Symphony Hall will, on June 27, play host to a show that could very well be one of the highlights of the summer concert season here in Boston. Josh Ritter, singer-songwriter and Bostonist favorite, will grace the Symphony Hall stage for a special creative partnership with the Pops. It's the latest in a series of innovative collaborations for the Pops, who will team up with Natalie Cole, Natalie Merchant,... [continue]

Bostonist has seen Mike Doughty perform on several occasions. Heck, we've seen him order a round of drinks for the crowd, so we feel like we have a special bond with the guy (he's no KLo, but then again, who can be?). So we were intrigued last week to see Doughty promote his latest album, Golden Delicious, by kicking it old school - as the frontman of a band. For those not wise in the... [continue]

Bostonist couldn't help but get misty-eyed when we read on Boston.com of how Newton teen Nathan Alden Robinson was posthumously honored during NBC's mini-marathon of "The Office" on Thursday night. Robinson, 15, died in March of of methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus, pneumonia, and influenza; the youth was a budding piano talent and a huge fan of the NBC television show. As the Globe noted in its obituary, Robinson learned the show's theme song a few weeks... [continue]

After months of "will they, won't they" rumors and days of "wow, they will" anticipation, the New Kids on the Block announced on the TODAY show this morning that they are officially reuniting. A new album and new tour are in the works, and the band's first live performance will take place on May 16, at New York's Rockefeller Plaza. The local media has been abuzz with ideas about what this could mean for NKOTB's... [continue]

"Well-regarded sports journalist covering Boston professional sports in 2008." Seems like a guaranteed job, right? And yet Boston is preparing to say goodbye to its second high-profile sports journo this week. The Globe's Jackie MacMullan agreed to take the latest Globe buyout offer and will be bidding Morrissey Boulevard adieu. News of MacMullan's imminent departure came on Tuesday, the same day word broke that WBZ's Bob Lobel would be saying goodbye to Boston television viewers.... [continue]

Jonathan Papelbon shouldn't be allowed access to big game balls once the final out has been recorded. It's one thing when a dog eats the ball that won the 2007 World Series for Boston, but when word spread this morning that another sentimental game ball likely fell victim to our closer? Paps, it's time to have a little chat about what a keepsake is. Daisuke Matsuzaka pitched brilliantly on Tuesday night, during the latest stop... [continue]

Paul Pierce might not think about the games he's recently played, but Celtics fans had past performances in their minds on Wednesday night - particularly the manner in which he'd faltered last month during play against those pesky Suns of Phoenix. It was with a big cheer (and sigh of relief) that we responded to a 27-point effort from P Squared during last night's 117-97 Celtics win at the Call It What You Want... [continue]

We were confused when we read Dan Shaughnessy's wrap-up of Tuesday's season opener in Japan yesterday afternoon. While we agreed that the return of Red Sox baseball was "fun-filled, action-packed," it felt as Shaughnessy saw something in Japan that we missed back here in the States: title defense from the Sox and "those cardboard cutouts wearing an Oakland Athletics uniform." We saw occasionally shaky pitching and an Oakland team that could very easily have set... [continue]

For a team that was set not to board the planes, the Red Sox sure are making the most of their ongoing trip to Japan. They're sippin' their sake, they're seeing how much of a Japanese rockstar Daisuke Matsuzaka really is, and they're winning ballgames. Clay Buchholz struggled in his start, but the Sox went on to defeat the Hanshin Tigers, 6-5, on Saturday (yes, Saturday. In the future.). David Ortiz and J.D. Drew homered... [continue]

In late January, the Dresden Dolls' Amanda Palmer told fans on her MySpace page that she would soon be going under the knife. Nodes had formed on the pianist/singer's vocal cords, and it would require surgery to remove them and get her throat back into shape. As she wrote at the time: long story short: i'll be getting this done in march and they ask that you go easy on your voice leading up the... [continue]

Sports Redux: Streak Struck on March 19, 2008

There are good opponents, great opponents, and opponents in the midst of the second-longest winning streak in NBA history. Maybe we still have the Super Bowl in the back of our minds, because it felt awfully nice to watch the Celtics put to an end the 22-game winning streak that the Houston Rockets brought into the Toyota Center on Tuesday night. Not only was it a game that matched up two of the hottest teams... [continue]

Sports Redux: Jazz Hands on March 15, 2008

The game that unfolded within the TDBN Garden on Friday night was better than the score, 110-92 in favor of the Utah Jazz, indicates. So there's a silver lining. Add to it the fact that it was inevitable that the Celtics' umpteenth hot streak of the season would hit a snag and Friday's home loss isn't devastating. Disappointing? That's another story. The Jazz came out on fire, led by Deron Williams' 32 points, and was... [continue]
