It's Trailer Treats Time! on July 16, 2008

Brattle Trailer Treats Thursday, July 17 Doors 7:00 pm, $12 More details Head to the Brattle for one of summer's finest events--the trailer treats and the trailer smackdown. The Brattle Theatre not only unfurls some of the goofiest trailers it has on hand, but they also show off the finalists in their annual "Trailer Smackdown" competition. This year, local filmmakers were told that they could make any trailer they liked, as long as it included... [continue]

When Bostonist were kids, there were two nights a year we were permitted to stay up wicked late: New Year's Eve, and the baseball All-Star Game. We don't think we would have been allowed to stay up 'til 1:47 A.M. as kids. But that's what it would have taken to make it through last night's game. When it finally ended, in front of about 20,000 people who paid hundreds and hundreds of dollars a ticket... [continue]

Champlin's Seafood 256 Great Island Road Galilee, RI $14.99 What says summer better than lobster rolls? Denizens of the lesser states may disagree, but here in New England, we know the truth. Bostonist kicks off its Lobster Rollover with a trip out of town, out of state even, but one well worth the drive. Champlin's Seafood is located in Galilee, RI, at the tip of Naragansett Bay and right next to the dock where ferries... [continue]

Image tagged Bostonist by BGLewandowski on Flickr The Globe has published a trend piece on folks with summer homes near their regular homes. Citing convenience, established summer activities in the area, and high gas prices as reasons for summering close to home, many people are beginning to buy summer homes less than 30 minutes away from their first. Maybe this Bostonist is just jealous because she never had a summer home growing up, but... [continue]

Fireworks photo tagged Bostonist by Aero Racer E on Flickr Here are some more most-awesome modes of non-traditional celebration of an American tradition. Did that make sense? Probably not. Regardless: Fire It Up (Not the Grill) The state pretends it limits fireworks for our "safety," but maybe they just don't want us to have any fun. Massachusetts has some of the country's most restrictive fireworks code. Pennsylvania is the closest state with lax laws,... [continue]

Cooperstown on the Charles on June 13, 2008

The National Baseball Hall of Fame is based in Cooperstown, NY, of course, but they've been taking their show on the road. Their traveling exhibition, called "Baseball As America", makes its final stop at the Museum of Science beginning next week, and it's amazing. Bostonist got a special sneak preview of the exhibit, attended by five Red Sox Hall of Famers (Carlton Fisk, Yaz, Eck, Wade Boggs and Bobby Doerr) and one visiting Oriole legend... [continue]

Now that the major political parties have (pretty much) settled on their presidential nominees, Bostonist has decided to take a look at a vital aspect of election strategy: t-shirts. We really wanted to be fair and balanced in our assessment, and not in a Fox News way, but having perused both candidates official stores and the many user-generated slogans at CafePress, we have to say: Barack Obama is the clear winner of the design... Bostonist loves stories that prove that the internet is useful for more than virtual poker and porn, and this one's a doozy. When legendary local band Boston lost their frontman, Brad Delp, to suicide last year, lifelong Boston fan Tommy DeCarlo wanted to pay tribute to how much the band's music meant to him. So his daughter created a MySpace page of him singing karaoke to a few of the band's hits. Somehow, through... [continue]

Bostonist Flickr pool member derequito posted a number of excellent shots of ceremonial groundbreaking at the Ferdinand Building, and also wrote about the issue on his blog. We're glad he brought this event to our attention, because it's a great reminder of the Dudley Square Vision Project, which will be discussed tomorrow from 4-6 in Roxbury. This meeting is (conveniently?) not listed on the City of Boston event calendar. The Dudley Square Vision involves real... [continue]

Are We Really Bad News? on May 20, 2008

The New York Post posits that "Beantown's bad news" for the New York Times Company. Apparently the Globe is bleeding money, with its ad revenue down 12% compared to the NYT's 0.7% drop. Help-wanted and auto ads in particular were down, with around 30% drops each. Apparently no one's hiring and no one's getting rid of cars despite those ginormous gas prices. Sigh. Times ads actually grew nearly 7% and circulation for the Times group... [continue]

ROFLCon invaded Cambridge over the weekend, storming MIT's lecture halls and colonizing the bars of Central Square with novelty t-shirts. Bostonist knows that the Internet is always talking to itself, about itself, but it was surreal to be in the room while that was happening. Case in point: this guy sat in front of us during a web comics panel, watching the live webcast and browsing Flickr images of the very talk that he... [continue]

Sports Redux: Throwin' BBs on April 30, 2008

Don't listen to the so-called experts. Kids LOVE pitchers' duels. Go up to any schoolboy and mention some of the great mound rivalries of the past - Koufax/Marichal, Gibson/Seaver, Palmer/Hunter - and, well, you'll probably get a blank look. But maybe you'll find a kid who knows what you're talking about, and chances are that kid appreciated the gem last night at Fenway. For the Sox, Jon Lester was throwing strikes (yay) and inducing groundouts,... [continue]

Apparently we can't handle the heat and should get out of the kitchen: brush fires are breaking out across the state. [WBZTV] Maybe we can use our tax refunds to buy ourselves a summer wardrobe. Or maybe to help out Roslindale. [Globe/AP] The Patriots have some hot draft day plans, but they don't need them. Because Tom Brady is enough hotness for any team. [WBZTV] Oh, poor Harvard. First Normie's steamy letters, now a cool... [continue]

Did you show up to register at ROFLcon and realize that your chosen outfits just aren’t geeky enough? Don’t worry: Bostonist has got you covered. If you’re not looking to make friends, J!NX offers There Is No Cheat Code To Make You Cooler. (Bostonist withholds comment on scoring one’s coolness on video game prowess.) Or be a little more accessibly insulting and let con-goers know that their ringtone sucks. If you’re feeling less combative,... [continue]

The curse-carryin' shredded-up David Ortiz jersey that had the Yanks quaking in their cleats has officially sold on eBay--for $175,100. Over a million people checked out the auction while it was going on, but not all of us could afford the awesomely exorbitant pricing. The auction benefits the Jimmy Fund, which unveiled the Ortiz jersey last Thursday at the Dana-Farber's Jimmy Fund Red Sox Gallery. The jersey will be on display at The Sports Museum... [continue]

We're going to be honest, we have no idea what is going on in this wacky photo by brudy0918, but whatever it is, we dig it. Check out another of his mind-bending creations while you're at it.... [continue]

The Greening of Southie Independent Film Festival of Boston Saturday, April 26, 1pm, Somerville Theatre Sunday, April 27, 11:30am, Coolidge Corner What goes into creating a building that’s 30% more energy efficient than most? The Greening of Southie, though it may seem to refer to the change in clothing color on St. Patrick's... [continue]

Focus On: The Boston Marathon on April 22, 2008

In place of Photo of the Day we wanted to share all the great shots that our diligent Flickr shutterbugs were able to capture along the race route during the 112th running of the Boston Marathon. Thanks to all for the great photos!... [continue]

Bostonist got up early today to check out the 2008 U.S. Women's Olympic Marathon Trials downtown. The course took the women on several loops through downtown, finishing at the same spot on Boylston where tomorrow's Boston Marathon will end. As expected, Deena "Dozen" Kastor won the race by a decent margin, carrying an American flag down the home stretch to finish in 2:29:35. She was followed by Magdalena Lewy Boulet in 2:30:19 and Blake Russell... [continue]
