Harvard Square is celebrating the Year of the Rat with a Lion Dance Parade. Perhaps even more meaningful for some Cambridge residents, the Hong Kong (yay scorpion bowl!) is holding an open house in honor of its 54th anniversary. But be aware that they are having a craft party, not a scorpion bowl party. 2:00 pm to 4:00 pm, free.

Even the Comedy Connection felt pressed to issue a warning: "This stand-up show contains very sexually explicit material and the strongest language imaginable. This show is for mature audiences only." He'll be at the Comedy Connection at Faneuil Hall tonight and tomorrow night. A weekend stand of winning baseball at home when the Sox take it to the Angels followed by the all day boozy spectator sport that is the Boston Marathon it's going to be a long week. Lucky for music fans there's a lot to look forward to and keep you up all night with that lovely ringing in your ears that only comes from live music.

As the saying goes April showers bring May flowers. We're willing to subscribe with that theory. April looks to be a bit soggy for us in the beginning, especially considering the current seven day forecast. That means that frolicking in the outdoors will be limited and heading into the haven of the local rock haunts will be plentiful. Lucky this week provides a host of great shows around the Boston area. Included this week is the Shoot the Moon residency at Abbey Lounge. Another one of those wonderful local bands we first heard while tuning into Exploit Boston Radio.

Berklee and Essence have teamed up again this year to bring the best young talent out to compete in the Hip Hop Songwriting Contest. If you are, or know, an eligible teen (unsigned and between 15 and 18) the time is nigh. Deadline for submission is March 9. All of a sudden we've got winter. If you're not into traveling all the way to the Tweeter Center for Journey and Def Leopard, check out this week's picks. Even if you are into heading down to the big name act's show you'll need something to do the rest of the week. There's no joking about it this week. Fall is here. By the time the weekend hits it's time to break out the cider and make some pumpkin pie. We're saving that for Sunday, however, the rest of the week is for music.

What's going on this week? Everyone is moving. Hipsters are swapping apartments in Allston. Scenesters are invading Cambridgeport. Undergrads and grad students are making their way into the new rental for September. The lucky ones have renewed their lease (or are keeping up with payments on the mortgage). All we can say is at least it's not raining. The humidity, not so much the heat, has got everyone running on a pretty sluggish pace today. Perhaps after another TurboIce things will pick up. Or some sweet nerdy action in the way of the IT Band Bash – you know the guy sitting in the cube across from you who's a rocker at night? Oh, you don't, well he might be. Mention “music festival” this weekend and the hipster friends may immediately presume you’re talking about Austin City Limits. Out hipster them and clarify that Boston, in fact, has its own music festival in the brew this weekend: N.E.S.T. (North East Sticks Together). A series of 30+ (mostly music related) events at 6 venues over 7 days, N.E.S.T. spans all genres, deeming itself “a solid cross sampling of local artists.” Though N.E.S.T. claims that it isn't a music festival, it more or less is. Four friends got together, made some calls and made it happen. The Boston Phoenix added a sponsorship and thus, we arrive at a week of DIY musical merriment. Bostonist, admittedly, knows very little of the bands slated to play; fortunately, both the Phoenix and N.E.S.T. mastermind Dan have put together solid recommendations. Bostonist was a-rockin’ this weekend, even before the Rolling Stones took the stage at Fenway. Juliana Hatfield commanded a faithful audience at the Paradise on Saturday night, following Boston locals Furvis and The Gentlemen. Hatfield, backed up by The Gentlemen’s drummer and bassist, offered a refreshing dose of thoughtful, introspective rock and roll.
