The Boston Celtics needed a 24-14 surge in the fourth quarter to beat the New Jersey Nets, 96-87, on Friday night. The Nets led the game 73-72 after three quarters, which necessitated the furious comeback in the first place. Color us underwhelmed at this victory. Yes, the 4-45 Nets who sit 27.5 games out of first place in the Atlantic division and have won one road game on the 2009-2010 schedule forced the Celtics into a fourth-quarter rally to improve to 32-16. With Paul Pierce sitting out a second-straight game, scoring in the stretch fell to Eddie House, who scored all 10 of his points in the fourth quarter to spark the comeback. more ›

Was it really less than a year ago that the Celtics had their hands more than full with the Chicago Bulls? Was it really just this past spring that the Bulls looked more athletic, faster, maybe even hungrier than the old-looking C's? What happened? more ›

Phil Kessel's played two games in the Garden since became an ex-employee there. We wonder if he's wistful, since his Leafs were smacked around both times. Last night, he watched his old teammate build a 3-0 lead and hang on for a 5-2 win. Goals by Mark Stuart, Derek Morris and David Krejci built the lead, then after Tuukka Rask let in two, Mark Recchi took over and scored the insurance goal and an empty-net lagniappe to put the Leafs away. more ›

Sox beat Orioles, Bruins trade Kessel The Red Sox beat the Orioles again. That's 14-2 in 2009. Clay Buchholz pitched well enough to keep the Orioles AAAA lineup in check. He threw for six innings and allowed just one run. Jacoby Ellsbury, Casey Kotchman and Jason Bay (home run) each drove in one run. Bay left the game early with flu-like symptoms, and should be available today. more ›

These injury-rattled 2008 Patriots may have finally settled on an identity. And it's not one that's going to please the kind of people who are only pleased by blowouts and offensive explosions. But football purists and fans of efficiency have to be pleased by the Pats' 20-10 win over Buffalo. It was a masterpiece of clock management, a triumph of minimalism. more ›

Nobody's going to be boxing this one up and sending it to Canton. It was slow, grinding, methodical and (objectively, let's be honest) kind of boring. But it was also quiet and efficient. Coach Belichick doesn't want style points - not right now, anyway - and he got exactly what he wanted, which was a W at New York. more ›

A mixed bag on Big TV day in New England. Let's start with the good: The Bills had won four in a row, and were feeling pretty good about being able to hang around with the Patriots. They even got an inspirational message on the Jumbotron from injured Kevin Everett, so they had to be pumped up. Eleven seconds later, they were down 28-0 (numbers may not be strictly accurate). We're running out of ways... more ›

The Celtics extended their undefeated streak on Friday night to eight games, but fans of the Bill Belichick School of Gloat-Free Victories can take heart in the fact that the team wants to take it to the next level. "We are nowhere near where we want to be," is the quote, provided by Paul Pierce, that sums up Friday night's game at the Garden, which ended with a 92-91 Boston advantage over Miami. Yes, the... more ›

"That's not the way we drew it up," said Colorado manager Clint Hurdle. "Obviously we have to change our game plan," added Todd Helton. "You can't make any mistakes," chimed in shellshocked starting pitcher Jeff Francis. If you're Colorado, what else can you say? The team that charged through September and most of October, and held Arizona to eight total runs in their mockery of an NLCS, looked like they hadn't played baseball in eight... more ›

Was there any doubt? The Patriots, good as they are, and now with the increased motivation of having the rest of the world hate them? Belichick, who is the smartest coach in the world anyway, now with the incentive to prove it? The wagons have been circled. You're either with us or against us. And the San Diego Chargers, who fancied themselves one of the elite teams in the NFL, got their butts handed to... more ›

In the Saturday afternoon matchup between the Celtics and the New Jersey Nets, the Celtics enjoyed a 96-88 victory in overtime. The Celtics started off looking ugly, but then they just flipped a switch and played like a pretty good team. The show belonged to Al Jefferson. He reached a career high, and the announcers went wild calling him "Big Al." Sure, the Celtics are still in the basement, but a three-game winning streak feels... more ›
