Army Lt. Timothy Steele of Duxbury was honored at a memorial service on Sunday at Holy Family Church. Steele, 25, died on August 23 in Afghanistan while serving in the 2nd Battalion, 87th Infantry Regiment, 3rd Brigade Combat Team, 10th Mountain Division. He was buried on Friday at the U.S. Military Academy at West Point, N.Y. He graduated from West Point and Duxbury High School. Congressman John Tierney wants stricter regulations to review all spending in Iraq and Afghanistan, according to a statement from his office. Tierney, whose the ranking member of the National Security, Homeland Defense, and Foreign Operations Oversight Subcommittee, called for new rules in response to a report from the Commission on Wartime Contracting that said more than $30 billion in contracts and grants in Iraq and Afghanistan was wasted in the last 10 years.
Senator Scott Brown missed out on our latest natural disaster, Hurricane Irene, as he was out of the country fulfilling his National Guard commitment. Brown has been serving in Afghanistan, speaking of disasters, and returns on Thursday from his first combat zone training assignment. Brown is a lieutenant colonel in the Judge Advocate General's Corps. A spokesman for Senator Brown, Marcie Kinzel, said his time in Kabul gave him "a heightened appreciation for the service and sacrifice demonstrated" by troops serving overseas.
General John Allen, the commander of U.S. forces in Afghanistan, said the Taliban insurgents responsible for shooting down the military helicopter carrying 38 American and Afghan personnel on Saturday, and killing all of them, were tracked down and killed by the U.S. and NATO on Monday in an airstrike involving at least one F-16. Taliban leader Mullah Mohibullah and the insurgent who apparently fired the rocket-propelled grenade were killed. Former Barnstable High School graduate and Navy SEAL Kevin Houston was killed on that helicopter. A memorial service for Houston is scheduled for Thursday in Virginia Beach, Virginia, at the Atlantic Shores Baptist Church.
Steve Bohn, 24, of Peabody was injured in a suicide bomber attack while serving in Afghanistan in 2008. Now, the Army 101st Airborne Division veteran is recovering from emergency surgery after being beaten by two men outside of The Page, a bar in Portsmouth, New Hampshire on Sunday. The Portsmouth Herald reported Bohn said he was assaulted and spit on by a group of people. Police said Bohn and a suspect were asked to leave the bar after an altercation of some kind. Police arrested two men for the assault. One is charged with simple assault and two counts of second-degree assault, and the other faces second degree assault, resisting arrest and simple assault charges.

A former New Hampshire resident, Chief Warrant Officer Christopher R. Thibodeau, 28, was killed Thursday in Afghanistan when his helicopter crashed in a combat operation. Thibodeau flew an Apache helicopter for the 1st Battalion, 4th Combat Aviation Brigade, based at Fort Hood, Texas. He attended Marlborough Elementary School and Keene High School before moving to Ohio. It was his first deployment in Afghanistan. [WHDH]

Major David L. Brodeur, 34, of Auburn was one of nine Americans shot and killed on Wednesday in Kabul by an officer in Afghanistan's Air Corps. Brodeur, a pilot in the U.S. Air Force, was one of eight soldiers killed. The ninth fatality was a civilian contractor.

The 182nd Infantry includs 690 members of Massachusetts National Guard who are preparing to go to Afghanistan. They'll relieve the 181st Infantry, and spend the next year deployed in Afghanistan. Lt. General William Caldwell is in charge of training the Afghan police. He said it's vital to get them trained for the mission there to be complete. The police have to succeed," he said.
Marine First Lieutenant James R. Zimmerman was killed in Afghanistan on November 2. Days earlier he told his father he was ready to come home from a tour filled with firefights.
Massachusetts State Police trooper Timothy J. Walsh, 41, of Dorchester faces multiple charges, including operating under the influence of alcohol and illegal discharge of a firearm, after allegedly driving drunk on South Munroe Terrace, colliding with parked cars, pointing a gun at an off-duty Boston police officer, and shooting into his living room ceiling. John Kerry apparently wanted to be Secretary of State for President Barack Obama. Hillary Clinton got the job, and Kerry had to settle for being chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee. Nine months into Obama's term, Kerry is acting like the country's top diplomat anyway. He dashed off to Afghanistan to talk policy and elections with Afghan President Hamid Karzai.
The new John Kerry, with an even higher profile, has earned the scrutiny of the funny newspeople like Jon Stewart. Last night, Stewart said Kerry met with Karzai in order to use "water boring" to get him into agree to a run-off election. Kerry is seen discussing Karzai in his usually glacial speaking style.
